In Battle To Stop Sexual Assault, Young Men Emerge As Allies
The Christian Science Monitor
At noon on a Monday this past April, Alex Stepanek and some of his brothers from Sigma Phi Epsilon set up a big seesaw in front of the student union at the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls. For 24 hours, they took turns tipping up and down to draw attention to their yearly Sexual Assault Awareness Week events and their giant jar to collect money for a local crisis shelter. "The biggest response we get is, 'You guys are a fraternity. Why are you doing Sexual Assault Awareness Week?'" says Mr. Stepanek, now a junior. "Someone thought that we were making a joke out of it ... and we just explained [that] victims of sexual assault don't stop being affected by the event ... so the least we can do is seesaw for 24 hours."

Move Over MOOCs — Collaborative MOOC 2.0 Is Coming
University World News
Massive open online courses — MOOCs — offered by top universities have expanded worldwide over the last three years, gaining students globally for courses designed in the United States and elsewhere and disseminated globally on platforms like Coursera, edX and the British-based FutureLearn. Their spread has the potential to disrupt the model of bricks-and-mortar universities each with their own courses — a theme much discussed in academia. But a new type of MOOC — dubbed MOOC 2.0 — could even disrupt the way courses are devised, altering the top-down university designed curriculum and the professor-to-student course structure that is still part of the MOOC model.

See How Colleges Have Changed In 3 Years
U.S. News & World Report
Year to year, it's hard to see how schools and college campuses change. Even though the K-12 student population is now "majority-minority," it's not as though teachers and students will notice a stark difference in classrooms between June and September. But the change is there, and colleges are beginning to see their student populations shift as well. Provisional data released by the Department of Education this week shows the Hispanic student population at four-year colleges has grown by more than 20 percent since 2010. While Hispanic students still make up just 7.2 percent of all undergraduates attending four-year and two-year schools, and 12.3 percent of all four-year college students, the number is growing faster than any other racial or ethnic group.

Colleges Could Improve Counseling
The Columbia Chronicle
As the number of young adults enrolling in higher education continues to rise, the need for colleges to provide adequate services for students with mental illness has increased. Like most institutions, Columbia offers various forms of counseling to its students. The office of Counseling Services provides them with a maximum of 10 free individual sessions per academic year and an unlimited number of group therapy sessions. Although Columbia does offer those services, they can be better advertised to students, and the number of sessions provided is inadequate to truly help a student struggling with mental ills.

#HigherEdLive Diversity: Rhetoric To Reality On Wednesday, November 19th At 1:00pm ET
ACPA
Ask 10 people for a definition of diversity and you may get ten different answers. When values and concepts are difficult to define, measuring them can be elusive. At a recent B1G, PAC10, BIG12 union and activities directors conference, Marsha Herman-Betzen, the Executive Director for the Association of College Unions International (ACUI), shared the association's recent Diversity and Inclusion (D&I) report which looked at specific indicators and made recommendations toward improving D&I efforts. The tool used was adapted from the Global Diversity and Inclusion Benchmarks: Standards for Organizations Around the World and outlines 280 benchmarks that describe poor, medium and excellent standards.
