Frequent Tests Can Enhance College Learning, Study Finds

Grading college students on quizzes given at the beginning of every class, rather than on midterms or a final exam, increases both attendance and overall performance, scientists reported Wednesday. The findings — from an experiment in which 901 students in a popular introduction to psychology course at the University of Texas took their laptops to class and were quizzed online — demonstrate that the computers can act as an aid to teaching, not just a distraction.

The 6th Annual Veteran Symposium for Higher Education will take place February 23 - 25, 2014 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Louisville, Kentucky. Registration is available now. Registration is only $249 per person and includes all program sessions, lunches, continental breakfasts, and receptions. The symposium is designed to address issues facing student veterans on campus. Presentations will include research reviews and discussions of best practice programs designed to assist student veterans. Scheduled topics include civic engagement, academic leadership, student orientation and advising, impact of military sexual trauma, peer advising, tuition policies, and prior learning assessment. High tuition fees and cost of living have lost London the top place in the QS Best Student City Index for the second year in a row, while North American cities fare less well than those in Europe, the Far East and Australia. The highest placed North American city is Boston, in eighth place after Singapore (3), Sydney (4), Melbourne and Zurich (joint 5), and Hong Kong (7). Montreal is ranked ninth and Munich tenth.
