3 NJ Universities Seeking Presidents As State Considers Higher Ed Changes

All three of New Jersey's public research universities are now looking for new presidents amid a recommendation that at least two of the schools be reconfigured with the hope of producing more collaborative research. While the openings at the top may put each school in a period of transition that provides an opportunity for a big merger, Gov. Chris Christie said they do not ensure that Rutgers, the New Jersey Institute of Technology and the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey will all be combined into one super-university. It seems everyone is squawking about higher education these days. Tuition costs are spiraling and on top of that, student loan default rates are soaring. Cumulative student loan debt totaled $848 billion on outstanding principal and interest balances for Direct Loans, FFELs (Stafford Loans), and Perkins, according to the National Center for Education Statistics in its most recent report, which doesn't take into account private loans. What's more, experts say students are taking too long to earn a degree. NCES also reports approximately 56 percent of college students are taking six or more years to graduate. CDC Releases National Intimate Partner And Sexual Violence 2010 Summary Report

On December 14, 2011, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) National Center for Injury Prevention and Control released data from the first National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey conducted in 2010. This annual survey is supported through the CDC, the National Institute of Justice, and the Department of Defense and is designed to provide important national and state-level data to aid in the understanding and prevention of sexual violence and stalking. This is the first study of its kind and holds important information for higher education. More

Florida A&M President To Keep Job While Authorities Probe Hazing Death Of Band Member

Florida A&M University's president will keep his job while authorities investigate the hazing death of a band member. The university's board of trustees rejected a call by Gov. Rick Scott that James Ammons be suspended. "We will stand firm against outside interference, no matter how well intended," Solomon Badger, the FAMU board chairman, said during a board meeting that was held by conference call. More
