Department Of Education Lists Cheapest, Costliest Colleges
Los Angeles Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Berea College doesn't have the cachet and name recognition of Harvard or Yale. But also, it doesn't have the high price tag. The small Christian school in Kentucky charges the lowest annual tuition and fees of any four-year private college — just $910, according to data released by the U.S. Department of Education. That's far less than the national average of $21,949, according to the agency. And it's a pittance compared with the most expensive four-year private school, Connecticut College, where tuition is $43,990, according to the agency. Sarah Lawrence, Columbia, Vassar and George Washington round out the list of the five priciest schools. The DOE lists on its website the least- and most-expensive U.S. schools as part of its effort to help students and parents understand the true cost of college. More

Game-Based Learning Gains Ground In Higher Education
The Atlantic    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Discussions of game-based learning tend to focus on K-12 classrooms, but educational gaming isn't just for children. From simulation-based games, to Massively Multiplayer Online games, to Alternate Reality Games, to Serious Games that take on real-world social issues such as Purdue University's Serious Games Center, higher education is on the path to widespread integration of all sorts of games in all sorts of classrooms. In its 2012 report on technology trends in higher education, the New Media Consortium predicts that the horizon for widespread adoption of game-based learning is just two to three years away. Despite some challenges, including economic pressures and institutional barriers, it's a good bet that game-based learning will soon be commonplace in most college and university classrooms. More

'The 12,' College Journalists To Chronicle 2012 Election On Tumblr
The Washington Post    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
It's all but certain that a handful of states will determine whether President Barack Obama or Mitt Romney will get to 270 electoral votes Nov. 6. And within those states, a few recurring narratives will dominate headlines: Economic recovery in Michigan. Immigration laws in Arizona. Union battles in Wisconsin. Northern Virginia (blue), and the rest of Virginia (not so blue). The Washington Post has launched The 12, aimed at keeping track of campaign issues across swing states. The site is powered by Tumblr and will be populated by student journalists at 12 universities in some of the most competitive 2012 election states. More
