Prescription drug abuse among American college students is linked to depression and suicidal thoughts, a new study finds. Researchers analyzed data from more than 26,000 college students at 40 campuses who took part in the 2008 American College Health Association National College Assessment survey. As part of the survey, the students were asked about their nonmedical use of prescription drugs such as painkillers, stimulants, sedatives and antidepressants, and about their mental health symptoms over the past year. About 13 percent of the college students reported nonmedical use of prescription drugs. More

A few days ago, ACPA President Keith Humphrey tweeted from his @acpaprez account that there was much that student affairs leaders could learn from the ongoing challenges at the University of Virginia. While the details of the current situation still are unfolding and it is likely that no one will ever know the full story, Keith encourages ACPA members to study the situation and find the lessons that are applicable to student affairs. Keith sees many: Campus relationships with governing boards, advancing one's pedagogical agenda in concert with others' agendas, leadership in times of change, and the evolving nature of the higher education system. ACPA Seeks Partnership With United International College (China)

On May 30, ACPA visited with United International College, located in the Guangdong Province of China. ACPA was represented by Executive Director Greg Roberts, ACPA President Keith Humphrey, and Professor Flo Hamrick. Super Wi-Fi Goes To College With New Government Effort

Google, Microsoft and more than 500 colleges and universities have created a new partnership with the team behind the Gig.U project, with plans to bring broadband to rural America using Super Wi-Fi. The Air.U partnership hopes to use the abandoned television airwaves to deliver Wi-Fi like networks to rural colleges. While these networks won't be the superfast gigabit networks research institutions will get under the Gig.U project, they could play a valuable role in getting Super Wi-Fi to the mainstream. More

ACPA Committed To Improving Overall Technology Of The Association

ACPA is working on developing a new, including an enhanced universal platform design. ACPA has also been improving the functionality of the members-only section of the Web site. All forms will be online forms shortly, which will allow requests to be processed faster and move ACPA forward in being more sustainable.
