Risa B. Weisberg, PhD – Treasurer – ADAA Member Since 2002
Assistant Chief of Psychology, VA Boston Healthcare System
Training Director, VA Boston Healthcare System Clinical Psychology Internship Program
Professor of Psychiatry, Boston University School of Medicine
Adjunct Professor of Psychiatry and Human Behavior, Alpert Medical School of Brown University
Adjunct Professor of Family Medicine, Alpert Medical School of Brown University
Dr. Weisberg's research and clinical interests center on primary care-behavioral health integration. She conducts research on means to implement evidence-based practice for common mental and behavioral health problems, including anxiety and depression, chronic pain, opiate misuse, HIV and sexual health problems, in primary care practices and other medical settings. She is a committed mentor, assisting in the development of clinical research skills in psychology interns and postdoctoral fellows. Dr. Weisberg's work across the domains of training, supervising, treating patients and conducting research is guided by her desire to increase dissemination and expand the reach of evidence-based behavioral treatments.
Why I am an ADAA member: I initially joined ADAA for the wonderful conferences. As a postdoctoral fellow, I was amazed by the depth of information presented at the meeting, and by the intimacy of the conference. It was a place where I could meet and easily speak with esteemed leaders in our field, when I was still very junior. Now, as a more senior professional who focuses much of her work on anxiety and depression, I look forward to the annual meeting as a place to keep up-to-date on the cutting edge of research and treatment in these areas, to reconnect with old friends and colleagues, and to network with new ones, especially junior colleagues. Over the years, I have become increasingly involved in the organization because ADAA is so much more than just the annual meeting. ADAA is a key resource not only for professionals, but for the general public, in disseminating information about and advancing treatment for anxiety and depression.
What I value about ADAA's mission and how it's a fit with my work: My work focuses on expanding the reach of evidence-based treatments for common behavioral health problems, such as anxiety and depression. ADAA's dual missions, to be a leading professional home for individuals across disciplines who study and treat anxiety and depression, and to be the "go-to" resource for members of the public looking for information about anxiety depression, are in perfect alignment with my own professional mission and personal values.
What is most exciting and interesting about my workplace: I am privileged to wear a number of different hats at work, each bringing its own source of fulfillment. I am extremely proud of the psychology internship training program at VA Boston Healthcare System, which helps to train generations of future leaders in the study and treatment of anxiety, depression and related disorders. In my research lab, we are working to develop new means to address crucial health problems including anxiety, depression, chronic pain and opiate misuse in primary care settings, where people most often seek care.

Prolonged Exposure Therapy for PTSD — Training Workshop — Oct. 16-19, 2017
Up to 50 percent of treatment-seeking individuals report PTSD symptoms that may require treatment. Learning to implement an evidence-based treatment for PTSD is therefore a priority for many clinicians. Dr. Edna Foa (an ADAA member) developed Prolonged Exposure Therapy for PTSD (PE) with these goals in mind: to create and disseminate an efficient, effective, and flexible treatment for those suffering with PTSD. Nearly 30 years later, PE has accumulated more research evidence than any other treatment for PTSD.
Dr. Foa and the faculty of the Center for the Treatment and Study of Anxiety at University of Pennsylvania are proud to offer the intensive workshop in Prolonged Exposure Therapy for PTSD (PE). Participants will learn the basics of PE as well as ways to modify the treatment for individual clients. A combination of discussion, role play, and actual patient video examples are used to prepare participants to implement PE in their practice after completion of the workshop.

Major depression is one of the most common mental disorders in the United States. While people are starting to recognize and seek treatment for depression during the teen years and adulthood, depression in older adults often goes overlooked and untreated. Older adults face loss of partners, chronic physical illnesses, financial concerns and cognitive impairment.

Many parents don't believe schools are prepared to help students with mental health problems and serious physical health issues, a new survey finds. While 77 percent of parents were certain that schools would be able to provide first aid for minor issues such as cuts, they were less confident that schools could respond to more challenging health situations.

If you were at risk for developing depression, would you take a pill to prevent it? For years, physicians have prescribed antidepressants to treat people grappling with depression. Some people can benefit from taking these medications during an acute episode. Others with a history of recurrent depression may take antidepressants to help prevent relapses.

Earlier this year, when Emily Chodos was about 25 weeks into her pregnancy, she woke up one night feeling horrible. She ended up paging her obstetrician's office at 4 a.m., and one of the midwives in the practice, after listening to her symptoms, said, "It sounds like you're having a panic attack."

Although older people have the highest suicide rates in the United States, a new study finds suicide attempts by younger adults — especially those with mental disorders and less education — are now on the rise. The findings support a suicide prevention focus on young people who are poorer, especially those who have made previous suicide attempts and those who have common mood, anxiety and personality disorders.

Although the clinical efficacy of antidepressants in children and adolescents is proven, it is frequently accompanied by side effects. In addition, the influence of the placebo effect on the efficacy of antidepressants is unclear. A meta-analysis published in JAMA Psychiatry has now shown that, although antidepressants are more effective than placebos, the difference is minor and varies according to the type of mental disorder.
