Spotlight on Maternal Mental Health
Wednesday, October 30, 12:00 pm - 4:00 pm ET

ADAA's inaugural virtual Fall Forum for professionals will address understanding and treating maternal anxiety and depression. ADAA's Spotlight on Maternal Mental Health addresses the interests of professionals across domains, by launching this year-long initiative focused on this important issue.

Personal Stories of Triumph - Supporting ADAA’s Mission
ADAA shares stories of triumph submitted by our public community that focus on how people living with anxiety, depression, obsessive-compulsive, and trauma-related disorders have struggled, coped, and triumphed.
In September, independent hip-hop artist Khing Ceaze shared his story – Let the Music Speak!
“As an independent hip hop recording artist, I found peace in the ability to convey my thoughts and emotions with words. Music provided me with an option to privately write my thoughts and experiences down on paper and go to the studio and deliver it to the world. For me, my music is a journal, each project being a glimpse into my perspective and opinions. I aim to use my platform to bring to light the issues that are faced every single day by millions of people across the globe. With great power comes great responsibility, and, being an entertainer, my goal is to help those who don’t have a voice by letting them know that they are not alone. Sometimes all we need is an understanding ear to simply listen, not judge, and comfort us during our times of hardship and emotional overload.”

 Julia Martin Burch, PhD
“A supervisor encouraged me to join ADAA in 2016 because of the excellent learning and networking opportunities for students and early career psychologists. I joined on her recommendation and soon after became part of the Child and Adolescent SIG leadership team and attended my first conference. I was blown away by the quality of the conference programming - I often wanted to attend three or four workshops per time slot - and left with many new evidence-based clinical insights and ideas. Since then, ADAA has become my favorite professional organization by far, due to the exceptional annual conference, professional development and networking opportunities, and the robust SIG programming. There are also so many ways to engage with the organization, such as the CDLP mentoring program or writing blogs for the lay public. I now encourage my own supervisees to join ADAA to build their professional networks and participate in the best conference around.”
Julia Martin Burch, PhD, is a clinical psychologist who works with children, teens, and parents in the McLean Anxiety Mastery Program. She specializes in evidence-based treatments, including cognitive behavior therapy and exposure and response prevention therapy, for youth anxiety and obsessive compulsive and related disorders. Dr. Martin Burch is also a member of the McLean School Consultation Service which trains school-based mental health staff around Massachusetts in the use of scientifically proven mental health treatments. She is interested in disseminating to the lay public scientifically proven practices for child anxiety, including writing blogs focused on child anxiety for Harvard Health and the American Psychological Association. To accompany child-oriented educational picture books, she also writes “Notes to Parents and Caregivers,” which include proven strategies to support anxious children.

The International Consortium for Health Outcomes Measurement (ICHOM) Forms International Working Group
The ICHOM has formed an international Working Group, including healthcare professionals, researchers, young people with experience of seeking help for anxiety, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and parents. The group examined how best to measure if children and young people are “better” following treatment for anxiety or depression and developed a recommendation for which outcomes are essential to measure, and how best to do so in clinical practice. Measuring the right outcomes helps service-users and healthcare providers understand whether mental health support has been helpful and where care might be improved.
They’d like to know if you agree with this recommendation! Please let ICHOM know your feedback on the relevance of these outcomes and measures via the following surveys:
- Patient or service-user survey: https://bit.ly/2mfi4Ls
- This survey is intended for those over 18, with experience of anxiety,
depression (including OCD or PTSD) as a child or young person, as well as
parents or carers.
- Professional survey: http://bit.ly/DACYPOR
- This survey is intended for any professional in the field

Relaxing is supposed to be good for the body and soul, but people with anxiety may actively resist relaxation and continue worrying to avoid a large jump in anxiety if something bad does happen, according to Penn State research.
In a new study, the researchers found that people who were more sensitive to shifts in negative emotion — quickly moving from a relaxed state to one of fear, for example — were more likely to feel anxious while being led through relaxation exercises.

Health, athleticism, intelligence, illness: The traits that make us who we are come from the interplay between the genes we inherit and the environment we’re exposed to. And those environmental effects begin even before we are born. Thanks to long-running studies that track offspring from womb to adulthood, we know that smoking during pregnancy is linked to low birth weight, that drinking alcohol can cause heart defects or joint disorders, that a bad diet raises the odds of a child being an obese as an adult.
But what about a mother’s mental health?

Researchers have uncovered sex-based differences in the development of the hippocampus and amygdala. Women who have a hysterectomy may be at increased risk for depression and anxiety, a new study reports.
Researchers used medical records of 2,094 women who had had a hysterectomy without removal of the ovaries, matching them with the same number of women of the same age who had not had the operation. None of the surgeries were performed to treat cancer. They followed them for an average of 22 years.

Family dysfunction, punitive parenting, and parental depression increase the risk for migraine in adolescents, a risk mediated by symptoms of depression and anxiety in late childhood, according to a study in Headache. “This knowledge should help to inform better clinical assessment of headache and identify mechanisms not within the control of the child that may alter their development of adverse health outcomes,” the researchers concluded.
