The ADAA Board and staff extends a huge thank you to everyone who helped make #GivingTuesday 2017 such a success. Together we are changing lives!
ADAA
ADAA is delighted to be collaborating with NAMI-SF, WeWork and Meru Health on the 2-Minute Mind Check — a San Francisco Bay Area community initiative focused on breaking the stigma around depression. Joining together we can help employees in the San Francisco Bay Area (a region of our country where productivity is prioritized and asking for help is viewed as a failing) determine where they stand on the depression scale and encourage those that are struggling to speak openly about their challenges, seek help and access the many free resources that our organizations provide.
The 2-Minute Mind Check formed earlier this year when NAMI-SF (National Alliance on Mental Illness-San Francisco) joined with ADAA, WeWork, Meru Health and others who wanted to do something to break the stigma and to help those who needlessly suffer from depression.
The 2-Minute Mind Check (2MMC), an online resource for measuring and getting support for depression, launched last week at 2minutemindcheck.com. This Bay Area initiative helps users determine where they stand on the depression scale in two minutes or less by completing an anonymous questionnaire. Individuals with depressive symptoms receive access to free educational materials and events, as well as connection to online communities and talk lines so they know they are not alone. To take the 2-Minute Mind Check, access resources, learn more and see a schedule of upcoming events, visit 2minutemindcheck.com.

You may be one of the growing number of Americans (or global citizens) who has a bit of nomophobia. "NO Mobile Phone Phobia" is a 21st-century term for the fear of not being able to use your cell phone or other smart device. Cell phone addiction is on the rise, surveys show, and a new study adds to a growing body of evidence that smartphone and internet addiction is harming our minds — literally.

A new study discovers a combination of personality traits may annul the effects of other traits, especially as related to the risk of depression and anxiety. Specifically, investigators discovered that while high levels of neuroticism put people at risk for depression and anxiety, if those same individuals are also highly extraverted and conscientious, they could have a measure of protection against those disorders.

A lot of people only know bipolar disorder as it's shown on TV or in movies. You know the trope: One minute characters are catatonically depressed, and the next they're so manic they think they can fly off a building. They can't hold down a steady job, and their relationships with friends and family are destructive at best. They're hypersexual and prone to fits of rage. Essentially, they're portrayed as completely out of control.
