AGTA 'Eye Candy' marketing campaign images now available

AGTA recently has added more than 50 new gemstone and jewelry images to its stock photography library on, including the popular "Eye Candy" marketing campaign images from the 2010 AGTA GemFair™ Tucson. These images are great for use in marketing materials, in-store posters or on your website. "We've had numerous requests from our members wanting to use the images from the Tucson GemFair campaign in their own stores," stated Adam Graham, AGTA marketing manager. "At the same time, we added many quality images of gemstones and jewelry that can be used in a variety of ways." More

Christie's New York jewels auction includes magnificent royal gems

Recent record-setting auction prices for rare gems seems to have convinced many that it is time to part with the family treasures. The jewels auction at Christie's New York showcased several magnificent gems that have not been seen in public in years. Among the most notable were the Emperor Maximilian diamond ring, a 39.55 carat cushion-cut stone that was purchased by Maximilian in Brazil prior to his installation to the throne of Mexico. It since has been owned by Laurence Graff and Imelda Marcos. More

4 Thais arrested for smuggling rubies in Mozambique

The Mozambican police recently arrested four Thai citizens who were trying to smuggle rubies out of the country, a Mozambique news agency reported, citing the independent daily "O Pais." The four were detained at the airport in the northern city of Pemba with the possession of more than 30 kilograms of rubies valued at more than $120 million, according to the police. Rubies vary enormously in price depending on their quality. High quality stones can sell at more than $5,000 a carat. More

Gems TV USA files for bankruptcy

Gems TV USA has filed for bankruptcy protection a month after the company announced it would wind down its operations in the U.S. ending what it called an "operational cash burn." In court the company applied for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and listed assets of $51.2 million and debts of $120 million. It claimed that rising gold prices had affected margins so severely that it had been left struggling to maintain a sufficient level of profitability to maintain operations in the U.S. and satisfy lenders. Gemfields and the World Land Trust collaborated with eight jewelry designers to create a unique pop-up collection of bespoke emerald jewelry. The aim of this collection is to create awareness of the plight of the Asian elephant and to bring attention to the World Land Trust's Indian Elephant Corridor project, which is raising funds to save elephants in India. The collection will be on display in the Selfridges Wonder Room during May. More

The Florida Marlins didn't win the World Series last season, but owner Jeffrey Loria put the same jeweler who designed the 2003 championship rings to work. The assignment: Create an eye-popping, spine-curving memento for Hanley Ramirez. In March, Loria appeared with the token to commemorate Ramirez winning the National League batting title. It's Earth Day. I have to admit that I still use Styrofoam coffee cups. I often forget to bring reusable bags to the grocery store. And when I hear about eco-friendly or recycled accessories, I'm always afraid they will look like this. But lately I've run across some designers and brands who are making bags and jewelry from reused and recycled materials that actually look good. These designers use old textiles, recycled metal and cast-off pieces in a way that is innovative and creative. Call me superficial, but I don't want a bag that looks like an old tire tread. More
