Workshop attendees will learn the history, chemistry, sampling techniques and current treatment options of PFAS, as well as developing regulatory proposals throughout the country. More than 4,700 PFAS (per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances) exist in the world today. Many PFAS transform into highly persistent perfluorinated chemicals in the environment. Short-chain PFAS tend to be more water soluble and move more easily through soil to contaminate ground-water, surface water or drinking water.

Geophysicists used data from an enormous earthquake in Bolivia to find mountains at the base of the mantle's transition zone, located 660 kilometers below our feet. Their statistical model didn't allow for precise height measurements, but these mountains may be bigger than anything on the surface of the Earth. The researchers also examined the top of the transition zone (410 km down) and did not find similar roughness.

The Edessa ophiolite complex of northern Greece consists of remnants of oceanic lithosphere emplaced during the Upper Jurassic-Lower Cretaceous onto the Palaeozoic-Mesozoic continental margin of Eurasia. This study presents new data on mineral compositions of mantle peridotites from this ophiolite, especially serpentinized harzburgite and minor lherzolite.

Following the discovery of the Hiawatha impact crater beneath the northwest margin of the Greenland Ice Sheet, we explored satellite and aerogeophysical data in search of additional such craters. Here we report the discovery of a possible second subglacial impact crater that is 36.5‐km wide and 183 km southeast of the Hiawatha impact crater.

In 2014, biologists digging in the black shale of Gabon's Bangombé Plateau discovered truly ancient treasure: perfectly preserved fossils of what might be the oldest multicellular organisms we've ever seen. Now, the 2.1-billion-year-old fossils of the Francevillian basin are in the spotlight again, as a closer look reveals that some of them might be the oldest organisms that ever moved on their own. In a study published in PNAS, international scientists point out tiny, noodle-shaped structures embedded in the rock, which they argue is the oldest-ever evidence a self-propelled multicellular organism.

Determining the impact chronology of the moon is an important yet challenging problem in planetary science even after decades of lunar samples and other analyses. In addition to crater counting statistics, orbital data, and dynamical models, well-constrained lunar sample ages are critical for proper interpretation of the moon's impact chronology. To understand which properties of lunar impact glasses yield well-constrained ages, we evaluated the compositions and sizes of 119 Apollo 14, 15, 16 and 17 impact glass samples whose compositions and 40Ar/39Ar ages have already been published, and we present new data on 43 others.

Nitrate is a significant water-quality issue in California, the United States as a whole and the world. Critical to addressing nitrate contamination is understanding the presence and extent of denitrification, and further refining the techniques used to identify nitrate sources. The use and understanding of nitrate isotopic signatures to identify nitrate sources have advanced tremendously; however, knowledge gaps remain concerning specific fractionation pathways and the role of denitrification in altering source values.
