AIPG

Hosted by AIPG National and the AIPG Wisconsin Section. Registration is open. Program
Workshop attendees will learn the history, chemistry, sampling techniques and current treatment options of PFAS, as well as developing regulatory proposals throughout the country. More than 4,700 PFAS (per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances) exist in the world today. Many PFAS transform into highly persistent perfluorinated chemicals in the environment. Short-chain PFAS tend to be more water soluble and move more easily through soil to contaminate ground-water, surface water or drinking water.

The Foundation of the American Institute of Professional Geologists is appreciative of the many donations received during 2018, including monetary donations, donated gifts-in-kind for the silent auction, and funds collected from bid winners at the silent auction at the AIPG annual meeting in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The silent auction generated interest in the Foundation and resulted in about $3,000 in funds to the Foundation. We are very thankful for these contributions and the interest in the Foundation. The Foundation is proud to be able to serve AIPG and the geosciences by providing financial support for scholarship programs, student workshops, and other endeavors in support of AIPG and the geosciences. Be sure to check the web site www.aipg.org/foundation for additional information about the Foundation. The Foundation is a 501(c)(3) organization. Contributions are tax deductible. We thank all our donors for their generous support of the Foundation. All contributions, no matter the amount, are greatly appreciated. Thank you! Barbara Murphy, CPG, Chairperson, Foundation of the AIPG

Energy Exposition
Attendees represent a wide range of services, including but not limited to, exploration, production, downstream and all phases of support to the industry. We have been privileged to have political attendees from the local community, city, county and state governments as well political luminaries such as former Vice President of the United States, Dick Cheney. In 2014 we were fortunate to have Vice President Dick Cheney as our Keynote Speaker. His daughter Liz (now U.S. Congresswoman Liz Cheney of Wyoming) also honored us by speaking at a couple of our events.
The Energy Exposition has educated tens of thousands of people in Gillette, Wyoming; Billings, Montana; and just recently Loveland, Colorado, over the last 19 years on procedures, technology, safety, environmental practices and equipment used in the oil and gas industry. Our doors have always been open to industry and non-industry attendees. Most of our exhibitors are from the oil and gas industry. We also welcome our participants from the wind, solar and other energy companies that support the oil and gas industry.

Close to surface, cohesive rocks fail in extension, which results in open fractures that can be several tens of meters wide, so-called massively dilatant faults. These open fractures make fault slip analysis in rifts challenging, as kinematic markers are absent. Faults in rifts often have oblique slip kinematics; however, how the amount of obliquity is expressed in the surface structure of massively dilatant faults remains enigmatic.

By assuming that changes in the magnetic field in the Earth's outer core are advection-dominated on short timescales, models of the core surface flow can be deduced from secular variation. Such models are known to be under-determined and thus require other assumptions to produce feasible flows. There are regions where poor knowledge of the core flow dynamics gives rise to further uncertainty. We use spherical Slepian functions to spatially and spectrally separate core flow models, confining the flow to either inside or outside these regions of interest.

A new section of the North Sea could open for oil and gas exploration after geologists dismissed the theory there were Jurassic volcanoes in the area.
The Rattray Volcanic Province had been thought to contain empty magma chambers, making it unsuitable for oil formation.
As a result, the 7,000 sq km area of the central North Sea was dismissed as a potential area for exploration.
But geologists at the University of Aberdeen have now challenged that view.

The olivine in basalt records much information about formation and evolution of basaltic magma, which may help to discriminate basalt tectonic settings. However, the viewpoint that olivine is connected with the tectonic setting where it formed is controversial. To verify the hypothesis, we intend to discriminate the basalt tectonic settings by geochemical characteristics of olivine.

The extinct echinoderm clade Stylophora consists of some of the strangest known deuterostomes. Stylophorans are known from complete, fully articulated skeletal remains from the middle Cambrian to the Pennsylvanian, but remain difficult to interpret. Their bizarre morphology, with a single appendage extending from a main body, has spawned vigorous debate over the phylogenetic significance of stylophorans, which were long considered modified but bona fide echinoderms with a feeding appendage.
