Submittals are due April 15 and awarded in the fall at the AIPG National Conference.
Your submittals may be done online or emailed to aipg@aipg.org.
The AIPG Student Chapter of the Year Award replaced the AIPG Student Chapter Annual Report because it covers the same information. It is still a requirement for all chapters to provide this information to the AIPG National Headquarters with the online submittal form or send the information via email to aipg@aipg.org by April 15 to be eligible for award or by May 1 to meet requirement.

1. Seal the borehole completely against cross connection 2. Map the DNAPL in fractures on the 1" scale 3. Map the dissolved species on the 6"-24" scale 4. Measure the conductivity profile on the 6" scale 5. Measure the head profile on the 5'-20' scale
Using the same blank liner. That is efficient! How?

Many geological and related engineering professional associations were founded in the 19th and early 20th centuries but ethics codes were generally not adopted until after WWII. The AAPG Code of Ethics was the first code and was adopted in 1924. Codes have changed over the years for a variety of reasons as has their organization. There are common principles in the codes like honesty, integrity, transparency, etc. Most codes also explicitly state that protection of the public's health, safety and welfare supersedes employer/client confidentiality. Emerging additions to ethics codes include statements about harassment and discrimination, sustainable development and global human welfare. Whether an ethics code requires enforcement procedures, the implications of enforcing an ethics code, and the characteristics of effective disciplinary procedures are reviewed.

Plan on attending AIPG's 2018 Annual Meeting in Colorado Springs. Our field trips will explore central Colorado including the Cripple Creek & Victor gold mine, the Portland cement plant and adjacent Niobrara Fm quarry, the upper Arkansas geothermal systems, the latest in SW South Park geology and the Wall Mountain Tuff, among others. The technical sessions will cover the full spectrum of geosciences; start thinking about your presentation. We're planning short courses on being an expert witness, the use of Rockware's software and preparing an AIPG/AGI GOLI course. We'll have a Student Career Day on Saturday, Sept. 8. Young professionals start working on a presentation on a project you're working on that will induce your employer to send you to the meeting; remember such presentations are also good marketing for your firm. And we're arranging a trip on the Pikes Peak Cog Railway to the 14,115-foot summit of America's mountain.
Submit an abstract for presentation at the conference. Call for abstracts available now!

Nicholas Watterson, PG, Senior Hydrogeologist
Title: A Cross-Section of a Hydrogeologist
Abstract: Groundwater is a critical natural resource in California providing up to one half of the total water supply in the state. It occurs in a variety of geologic settings and hydrogeologists work to understand the geologic characteristics relating to groundwater occurrence and movement and how natural and anthropogenic factors influence the distribution, quantity and quality of this important resource. Like groundwater, the career of a hydrogeologist can follow a variety of paths and occur in different configurations. In California there is considerable attention focused on ensuring the sustainable management of groundwater resources. The broad involvement of hydrogeologists in evaluating groundwater conditions and providing technical support for groundwater management planning presents diverse opportunities for hydrogeologists to provide their scientific understanding to help inform policy. There are many ways hydrogeologists apply their skills and experience, sometimes through fieldwork performing lithologic logging of borehole cuttings, sampling groundwater quality and measuring groundwater levels. Other times this involves interpreting aquifer properties from a well pump test, generating contours of groundwater levels, developing conceptual models of a hydrogeologic system or conducting numerical modeling of groundwater flow or solute transport. The March 7 AIPG Section Student Chapter presents a collection of career experiences of Nick Watterson and wisdom that can be applied to Earth Science students in pursuit of career opportunities. The event is located at the Earth and Physical Sciences Building on the UC Davis campus in Davis, California.

A University of Illinois-led team has identified unexpected geophysical signals underneath tectonically stable interiors of South America and Africa. The data suggest that geologic activity within stable portions of Earth's uppermost layer may have occurred more recently than previously believed. The findings, published in Nature Geoscience, challenge some of today's leading theories regarding plate tectonics.

Fluid inclusions are records of the physico-chemical conditions of fluid–rock interactions during magmatism, mineralization and fluid percolation and mixing processes. Laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) is a powerful tool for in situ analyses of small samples at micrometer levels. Here we report in situ analyses of fluid inclusions using LA-ICP-MS method.

Volcanic eruptions pose a threat to lives and property when volcano flanks and surroundings are densely populated. The local impact of an eruption depends firstly on its location, whether it occurs near a volcano summit, or down on the flanks. Then forecasting, with a defined accuracy, the location of a potential, imminent eruption would significantly improve the assessment and mitigation of volcanic hazards.

This study was carried out in the Pliocene interval of the southern North Sea F3 Block in the Netherlands. This research paper demonstrates how an integrated interpretation of geological information using seismic attributes, sequence stratigraphic interpretation and Wheeler transformation methods allow for the accurate interpretation of the depositional environment of a basin, as well as locating seismic geomorphological features.

During underground excavations for civil or mining engineering purposes, the variations in rock mass quality are important, especially for the design of the most suitable support to be applied to ensure stability. The aim of this investigation is to model the expected behavior of the ground, and thus to predict the scenarios indicating potential variations in the quality of the rock mass during underground excavation.
