Series: AGI/AIPG Geoscience Online Learning Webinar
CEUs: 0.10
Many geological and related engineering professional associations were founded in the 19th and early 20th centuries but ethics codes were generally not adopted until after WWII. The AAPG Code of Ethics was the first code and was adopted in 1924. Codes have changed over the years for a variety of reasons as has their organization. There are common principles in the codes like honesty, integrity, transparency, etc. Most codes also explicitly state that protection of the public's health, safety and welfare supersedes employer/client confidentiality. Emerging additions to ethics codes include statements about harassment and discrimination, sustainable development and global human welfare. Whether an ethics code requires enforcement procedures, the implications of enforcing an ethics code, and the characteristics of effective disciplinary procedures are reviewed.

Professionalism refers to the attitudes and behaviors that impact interpersonal relations in the workplace, the foundations of which are based on the concepts of power, trust, respect, responsibility, justice, and fairness. The nature of the Geosciences (e.g., working with an incomplete record, temporal and spatial scales beyond human perception, uncertainty in natural systems), and the geoscience work environment (e.g., in the field, laboratory, with extensive travel) presents many situations where ethical dilemmas may arise. Recent high-visibility transgressions have brought special attention to sexual harassment and bullying in the workplace. Everyone has a right to a safe, inclusive, supportive, and productive work environment and a high bar must be set for both students and faculty to ascribe to the highest professional standards of the discipline. This webinar will introduce topics that contribute to workplace "climate" (e.g., microaggressions, implicit bias, empowering bystanders), and will provide suggestions for personal and institutional actions that can be taken to ensure that everyone can succeed in your department.

Plan on attending AIPG's 2018 Annual Meeting in Colorado Springs. Our field trips will explore central Colorado including the Cripple Creek & Victor gold mine, the Portland cement plant and adjacent Niobrara Fm quarry, the upper Arkansas geothermal systems, the latest in SW South Park geology and the Wall Mountain Tuff, among others. The technical sessions will cover the full spectrum of geosciences; start thinking about your presentation. We're planning short courses on being an expert witness, the use of Rockware's software and preparing an AIPG/AGI GOLI course. We'll have a Student Career Day on Saturday, Sept. 8. Young professionals start working on a presentation on a project you're working on that will induce your employer to send you to the meeting; remember such presentations are also good marketing for your firm. And we're arranging a trip on the Pikes Peak Cog Railway to the 14,115-foot summit of America's mountain.
Submit an abstract for presentation at the conference. Call for abstracts available now!
American Geosciencs Institute
The Geoscience Online Learning Initiative (GOLI) is an initiative by the American Geosciences Institute, started in cooperation with the American Institute of Professional Geologists, to provide a platform for asynchronous, life-long learning and continuing education opportunities in the geosciences. The long-term vision for GOLI is to provide a platform for geoscience societies to host asynchronous learning modules for use in both professional continuing education and for professional topics to help students be better prepared for entering the geoscience workforce. AGI is interested in providing this platform with the hope that Member Societies will create a transparent marketplace for learning opportunities and CEUs/micro-credentials that are transferrable across the entire profession.
GOLI live webinar courses provide up to date information on technical and applied geoscience topics and are taught by a range of experts from across the geosciences. Attendees earn Continuing Education Units (CEUs) upon the completion of the webinar course.
GOLI asynchronous online courses provide learners with the flexibility to actively self-pace their progress, because asynchronous courses do not have a set schedule like traditional academic semester-based courses. Brought to you via the Open edX Learning Management System (LMS), learners are able to browse course descriptions, enroll in specific courses, access content, and complete any course completely free of charge. All learners who complete online courses offered through the GOLI platform with a passing grade of 70 percent or higher are eligible to purchase Continuing Education Units (CEUs) for a nominal charge.

Nicholas Watterson, PG, Senior Hydrogeologist
Title: A Cross-Section of a Hydrogeologist
Abstract: Groundwater is a critical natural resource in California providing up to one half of the total water supply in the state. It occurs in a variety of geologic settings and hydrogeologists work to understand the geologic characteristics relating to groundwater occurrence and movement and how natural and anthropogenic factors influence the distribution, quantity and quality of this important resource. Like groundwater, the career of a hydrogeologist can follow a variety of paths and occur in different configurations. In California there is considerable attention focused on ensuring the sustainable management of groundwater resources. The broad involvement of hydrogeologists in evaluating groundwater conditions and providing technical support for groundwater management planning presents diverse opportunities for hydrogeologists to provide their scientific understanding to help inform policy. There are many ways hydrogeologists apply their skills and experience, sometimes through fieldwork performing lithologic logging of borehole cuttings, sampling groundwater quality and measuring groundwater levels. Other times this involves interpreting aquifer properties from a well pump test, generating contours of groundwater levels, developing conceptual models of a hydrogeologic system or conducting numerical modeling of groundwater flow or solute transport. The March 7 AIPG Section Student Chapter presents a collection of career experiences of Nick Watterson and wisdom that can be applied to Earth Science students in pursuit of career opportunities. The event is located at the Earth and Physical Sciences Building on the UC Davis campus in Davis, California.

The best-known and most-studied petrified wood specimens are those that are mineralized with polymorphs of silica: opal-A, opal-C, chalcedony and quartz. Less familiar are fossil woods preserved with non-silica minerals. This report reviews discoveries of woods mineralized with calcium carbonate, calcium phosphate, various iron and copper minerals, manganese oxide, fluorite, barite, natrolite and smectite clay. Regardless of composition, the processes of mineralization involve the same factors: availability of dissolved elements, pH, Eh and burial temperature.

A recent fascinating development in the study of high-grade metamorphic basements is represented by the finding of tiny inclusions of crystallized melt (nanogranitoid inclusions) hosted in peritectic phases of migmatites and granulites. These inclusions have the potential to provide the primary composition of crustal melts at the source. A novel use of the recently-published nanogranitoid compositional database is presented here.

The driving forces of plate motion, especially that of its sudden change over time, has long been debated. During the closure of an old ocean, the subduction process of the mid-ocean ridge provides valuable clues to quantitative evaluation of the driving forces of plate tectonics. Here we show that the drifting rates of the Indian plate were correlated with a Late Cretaceous adakitic event hosting abundant adakites and adakitic charnockites in the Gangdese belt, southern Tibetan Plateau.

A unique specimen of fossil resin originating from the Dipterocarpaceae tree family found in Miocene brown coal deposits in Jambi Province (Sumatra, Indonesia) was investigated via microscopic observations, microhardness testing and infrared and Raman spectroscopic methods. Its form is rare in nature, being an aggregate of three varieties of resin differing in color, transparency and internal structure. This suggests the formation of the resins at different stages.

Although carbonate-precipitating cyanobacteria are ubiquitous in aquatic ecosystems today, the criteria used to identify them in the geological record are subjective and rarely testable. Differences in the mode of biomineralization between cyanobacteria and eukaryotes, i.e., biologically induced calcification (BIM) vs. biologically controlled calcification (BCM), result in different crystallographic structures which might be used as a criterion to test cyanobacterial affinities.
