AIPG is currently accepting abstracts for oral presentations and poster presentations for the 58th American Institute of Professional Geologists' National Conference that will be held in Sacramento, California, from October 23-26, 2021.
The national conference provides opportunities to present and learn from experts in various geology and geoscience fields, with networking opportunities throughout the conference. Earn CEUs too!

Minnesota Section of AIPG — FG Grant Information
AIPG
The Minnesota Section of the American Institute of Professional Geologists (AIPG) awards grants to students taking the Association of State Boards of Geology® (ASBOG) Fundamentals of Geology (FG) exam. Grants are $200 each, which covers the ASBOG portion of the exam fee. Approximately 10 grants will be awarded each academic year, five for the Autumn FG examination and five for the Spring FG examination. Applications for the 2021 Spring FG Grant will be accepted through March 19, 2021.

FG Grant Requirements:
- Applicant must be an undergraduate or graduate student, enrolled in a Minnesota college or university geoscience program.
- Applicant must be Student Member of AIPG. Membership for students is FREE. Become a member by filling out the application on the AIPG National website: https://aipg.org/page/MembershipApps.
- Applicant must not have been previously awarded an AIPG MN Section FG Grant.
- Applicant must demonstrate proof of approval to site for the Spring or Autumn FG examination.

Eligibility
- For any undergraduate student who is majoring in geology (or earth science)
- Who is at least a sophomore
- Attending a two-year or four-year accredited college or university in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
- Is an AIPG student member or must have applied for student membership at the time the application for scholarship is submitted
Eligible applicants must submit:
- The AIPG Pennsylvania Section Application
- A 600 to 800 word essay about your background and what inspired your interest in geology. Was it a person, a place seen while traveling, A TV show or movie background? What do you hope to do with your degree?
- One letter of recommendation from a geology/geoscience professor that provides emphasis on your performance and activities in the classroom, in the department, and your character in how you work and help other students.
- College transcript with GPA

Two scholarships will be awarded. Each scholarship amount is $500.
Deadline to submit the application and necessary documentation is March 15, 2021.

Swarm of 20,000 earthquakes could make Iceland's volcanoes erupt

More than 20,000 earthquakes have shaken southern Iceland this week, rattling the capital city of Reykjavik and keeping geologists on their toes as all signs point to a pending volcanic eruption, the Icelandic Meteorological Office (IMO) reported on Thursday (March 4).
This week's marathon of quakes continues a swarm of seismic activity that began on Feb. 24, when a 5.7-magnitude earthquake struck near Iceland's Reykjanes Peninsula — about 20 miles (32 kilometers) from the capital city.

The Big One is characterized by experts as an earthquake of a 7.8 magnitude or above along the San Andreas fault; such an event is likely to be 44 times as powerful as the 1994 Los Angeles Northridge quake, which killed more than 60 people and injured upwards of 9,000.

The migration of arc magmatism that is a fundamental aspect of plate tectonics may reflect the complex interaction between subduction zone processes and regional tectonics. Here we report new observations on volcanic migration from northwestern Sumatra, in the westernmost Sunda arc, characterized by an oblique convergent boundary between the Indo-Australian and Eurasian plates.
