On Friday, April 12, 2019, members of the AIPG IL-IN Section and invited guests will tour the operations of US Silica at Ottawa, IL. After field tours of the open pit operations and selected reclamation sites, participants will be given a look at the United States’ largest silica sand processing operation (described from USS’s website below). In the afternoon, participants can visit nearby Starved Rock State Park to hike and compare natural outcroppings with those seen in the mine. A late lunch at the "Cajun Connection" is another option to add spice to this day's events!

A collision with a rogue iceberg earlier this year jeopardized several experiments dependent on China's most recent Antarctic voyage — including an effort to drill through almost 200 meters of ice to collect a sample of the underlying bedrock. The work was an early test of an ambitious plan to extract rock from an enormous mountain range that is buried beneath a kilometer or more of ice. The project yielded the first rock core collected from beneath East Antarctica in more than 60 years.

Long-term environmental performance assessments of natural processes, including erosion, are critically important for waste repository site evaluation. However, assessing a site's ability to continuously function is challenging due to parameter uncertainty and compounding nonlinear processes. In lieu of unavailable site data for model calibration, we present a workflow to include multiple sources of surrogate data and reduced-order models to validate parameters for a long-term erosion assessment of a low-level radioactive nuclear waste repository.

With mining of seafloor massive sulfides (SMS) coming closer to reality, it is vital that we have a good understanding of the geochemistry of these occurrences and the potential toxicity impact associated with mining them. In this study, SMS samples from seven hydrothermal fields from various tectonic settings were investigated by in-situ microanalysis (electron microprobe (EMPA) and laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS)) to highlight the distribution of potentially-toxic trace elements (Cu, Zn, Pb, Mn, Cd, As, Sb, Co, Ni, Bi, Ag and Hg) within the deposits, their minerals and textures.

Of all the key parameters needed to inform forecast models, real-time tracking particle size distribution (PSD) of pyroclasts leaving the vent coupled with plume modeling has probably the highest potential for effective management of volcanic crises. This paper presents an algorithm capable of providing syn-emission horizontal size and velocity of particles in real time, converted in mass discharge rates, and its evolution during an explosion, using thermal infrared videos.
