Workshop attendees will learn the history, chemistry, sampling techniques and current treatment options of PFAS, as well as developing regulatory proposals throughout the country. More than 4,700 PFAS (per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances) exist in the world today. Many PFAS transform into highly persistent perfluorinated chemicals in the environment. Short-chain PFAS tend to be more water soluble and move more easily through soil to contaminate ground-water, surface water or drinking water.

On Friday, April 12, 2019, members of the AIPG IL-IN Section and invited guests will tour the operations of US Silica at Ottawa, IL. After field tours of the open pit operations and selected reclamation sites, participants will be given a look at the United States’ largest silica sand processing operation (described from USS’s website below). In the afternoon, participants can visit nearby Starved Rock State Park to hike and compare natural outcroppings with those seen in the mine. A late lunch at the "Cajun Connection" is another option to add spice to this day's events!

We have been privileged to have political attendees from the local community, city, county and state governments as well political luminaries such as former Vice President of the United States, Dick Cheney. In 2014 we were fortunate to have Vice President Dick Cheney as our Keynote Speaker. His daughter Liz (now U.S. Congresswoman Liz Cheney of Wyoming) also honored us by speaking at a couple of our events.
The Energy Exposition has educated tens of thousands of people in Gillette, Wyoming; Billings, Montana; and just recently Loveland, Colorado, over the last 19 years on procedures, technology, safety, environmental practices and equipment used in the oil and gas industry. Our doors have always been open to industry and non-industry attendees. Most of our exhibitors are from the oil and gas industry. We also welcome our participants from the wind, solar and other energy companies that support the oil and gas industry.

Here we describe a new mineral in the Cu-Ag-Te system, spiridonovite. The specimen was discovered in a fragment from the cameronite [ideally, Cu5-x(Cu,Ag)3+xTe10] holotype material from the Good Hope mine, Vulcan, Colorado. It occurs as black grains of subhedral to anhedral morphology, with a maximum size up to 65 μm, and shows black streaks.

Retrogressive slumping could accelerate sea-level rise if ice-sheet retreat generates ice cliffs much taller than observed today. The tallest ice cliffs, which extend roughly 100 m above sea level, calve only after ice-flow processes thin the ice to near flotation. Above some ice-cliff height limit, the stress state in ice will satisfy the material-failure criterion, resulting in faster brittle failure. New terrestrial radar data from Helheim Glacier, Greenland, suggest that taller subaerial cliffs are prone to failure by slumping, unloading submarine ice to allow buoyancy-driven full-thickness calving.

Scientists say they have discovered a "stunning" trove of thousands of fossils on a river bank in China.
The fossils are estimated to be about 518 million years old, and are particularly unusual because the soft body tissue of many creatures, including their skin, eyes and internal organs, have been "exquisitely" well preserved.
Palaeontologists have called the findings "mind-blowing" — especially because more than half the fossils are previously undiscovered species.

Multivariate statistics are widely and routinely used in the field of hydrogeochemistry. Trace elements, for which numerous samples show concentrations below the detection limit (censored data from a truncated dataset), are removed from the dataset in the multivariate treatment. This study now proposes an approach that consists of avoiding the truncation of the dataset of some critical elements, such as those recognized as sensitive elements regarding human health (fluoride, iron and manganese).

Off the coast of Washington state, columns of bubbles rise from the seafloor, as if evidence of a sleeping dragon lying below. But these bubbles are methane that is squeezed out of sediment and rises up through the water. The locations where they emerge provide important clues to what will happen during a major offshore earthquake.
The study, from the University of Washington and Oregon State University, was recently published in the Journal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth.

A scientific study describes for the first time the submarine cartography of a high-latitude system in the INBIS channel, which covers tens of kilometers in the northern western area of the Barents Sea, in the Arctic Ocean.
This channel is one of the few submarine valleys in polar latitudes that kept its geological architecture during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM), according to the new study published in the journal Arktos — The Journal of Arctic Geosciences.

We investigate the pore network geometry and permeability of six natural sandstones and carbonate rocks. Using 3-D microtomographic images, we segment each rock sample into three phases: Solid matrix of grains, macropores containing void spaces, and a third microporous phase containing nanometer-sized pores beyond the resolution of the image.
