Plan on attending AIPG's 2018 Annual Meeting in Colorado Springs. Our field trips will explore central Colorado including the Cripple Creek & Victor gold mine, the Portland cement plant and adjacent Niobrara Fm quarry, the upper Arkansas geothermal systems, the latest in SW South Park geology and the Wall Mountain Tuff, among others. The technical sessions will cover the full spectrum of geosciences; start thinking about your presentation. We're planning short courses on being an expert witness, the use of Rockware's software and preparing an AIPG/AGI GOLI course. We'll have a Student Career Day on Saturday, Sept. 8. Young professionals start working on a presentation on a project you're working on that will induce your employer to send you to the meeting; remember such presentations are also good marketing for your firm. And we're arranging a trip on the Pikes Peak Cog Railway to the 14,115-foot summit of America's mountain.
Submit an abstract for presentation at the conference. Call for abstracts available now!

SME Arizona Conference organizes a field trip annually, and this year they have kindly invited AIPG to join them. There is no charge for the field trip, because the conference organizers use part of the proceeds of the annual December SME Arizona conference to pay for the buses, and the mine site acts as host for the lunch. Please mark your calendar for Saturday, April 14, for this year's trip, which will be a tour of the Grupo Mexico Buenavista del Cobre operations located in Cananea, Sonora.
The day will start early, with several full-size tour buses leaving from Tucson at 6:30 am at a central Tucson location (details will be provided closer to the date). There will be some general presentations and then opportunities to select a part of the mine operations to visit in smaller groups. It's a large operation, since it is not feasible to see all of the operations during a one-day visit. Following the excursion to the area of your choice, the mine will host a lunch. Buses will arrive back in Tucson about 4:30 p.m.
Dinner after the Field Trip
AIPG has also organized a dinner that evening at a fabulous Mexican restaurant located in St. Philip's Plaza. We will gather at 7 p.m. at Reforma Cocina Cantina (4340 N Campbell Avenue, Tucson AZ, 85718). We have reserved an outdoor patio for our group. Food and drinks are available to be ordered off the menu. There will be an informal section business meeting as part of the get-together. The timing between the field trip return and the dinner event is tight, but we aren't being held to a strict schedule, so participants shouldn't worry about late arrival to the restaurant.
Field Trip Registration
A formal invitation with registration instructions for the field trip will be emailed separately. SME hopes to have the registration information ready prior to the end of February. AIPG will email it out as soon as it is ready. AIPG members will need to respond to SME regarding registration for the field trip, whereas a separate registration for the dinner will be made to AIPG.
Dinner Registration
Persons who want to attend the dinner on April 14 should email Dawn Garcia at dawnhgarcia@q.com or call 520-471-9387. Please include your name, email address and phone number, plus the number in your party. Registrants are not required to attend both the field trip and the dinner.
Lodging in Tucson
For out-of-town members, there is a hotel located in St. Philip's Plaza (Homewood Suites by Hilton). It is next to the restaurant where we'll have the evening event. Rooms are about $140 per night. AIPG has not reserved any hotel rooms for this event. Anyone wanting a hotel room should make their own arrangements. Homewood Suites by Hilton, 4250 N Campbell Avenue, 520-577-0007.

RFG 2018

Exploration is fundamental to the supply of resources, whether we need to find water, minerals or energy. This conference offers an array of opportunities for participants to explore, seek new ideas or connections with people, acquire cutting-edge skills through short courses or field trips, or find inspiration in other aspects of geoscience. Pushing boundaries in all these ways will help us reach our collective goals of sustainability and build a prosperous future that is based on responsible resource development.
The plenary and keynote sessions will provide fertile ground for new ideas; everything from history of the earth, to how minerals and energy are linked, and a dialogue on ownership of resources. The diverse group of big thinkers and experts will provoke, inspire and challenge us to view resources in new ways.
- What does responsible mining look like?
- Who owns resources?
- What is the future of energy?
- What are the innovations and frontiers?
All these and more will inform the discussion at the Resources for Future Generations 2018 conference. The extensive program includes sessions and events organized by our partners, Geological Association of Canada (GAC), Mineralogical Association of Canada (MAC) and Association of Applied Geochemists (AAG), representing their annual meetings for 2018, a collaboration that adds depth to the conference breadth. Join us, along with our many technical partners, for an extraordinary event.

Mantle anisotropy beneath mid‐ocean ridges and oceanic transforms is key to our understanding of seafloor spreading and underlying dynamics of divergent plate boundaries. Observations are sparse, however, given the remoteness of the oceans and the difficulties of seismic instrumentation. To overcome this, we utilize the global distribution of seismicity along transform faults to measure shear wave splitting of more than 550 direct S phases recorded at 56 carefully selected seismic stations worldwide.

The modern mantle and crust have a complex structure and, in addition, contain both thermal and material heterogeneities, as evidenced by the results of seismic and electromagnetic studies. Changes are also reflected by the change in the mineralogical and chemical composition of the matter. This structure was formed for the long geological history of the planet's development and the process continues at the present time. The system remains unsteady. To understand the evolution of such dynamic structures, information is needed about the initial state of the system, in our case, about the state of the Earth at the final stage of its formation.

The three-dimensional growth of fault-related folds is known to be an important process during the development of compressive mountain belts. However, comparatively little is known concerning the manner in which fold growth is expressed in topographic relief and local drainage networks. Here we report results from a coupled kinematic and surface process model of fault-related folding.

This study describes a previously unidentified Neoproterozoic mafic dyke emplaced in the northern flank of the Langshan Tectonic Belt. This dyke intruded into the micaquartz schist of the Zhaertaishan Group, and yielded an age of 908 ± 8 Ma. The youngest U–Pb ages of micaquartz schist from the Zhaertaishan Group in the Langshan area were 1118± 33 Ma, 1187± 3 Ma and 1189± 39 Ma, suggesting that the depositional age of the protolith of the schist was between 908 ± 8 Ma and 1118± 33 Ma.

Diatomite, a rock formed by the accumulation of opaline diatom frustules, is a preferred raw material for the manufacturing of filters. Its uniqueness relies on the high porosity and inertness of the frustules. The presence of carbonates in some diatomite ores hinders these properties. The purpose of this study was to identify the type of carbonates and their association with the ore in a diatomite deposit, and to assess the suitability of determining the quality of the ore using techniques with potential for in-pit implementation.

Central and Eastern Anatolia (present-day Turkey) accommodated Africa–Eurasia convergence in Cenozoic times. As a result, the region underwent distributed deformation and rotation. We provide a paleomagnetic dataset from sedimentary basins and assess the timing and amount of rotations. The obtained rotation patterns together with known fault zones suggest that south-central Turkey represents a coherently counterclockwise-rotating domain.
