AIPG

Hosted by AIPG National and the AIPG Wisconsin Section. Registration is open. Program
Workshop attendees will learn the history, chemistry, sampling techniques and current treatment options of PFAS, as well as developing regulatory proposals throughout the country. More than 4,700 PFAS (per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances) exist in the world today. Many PFAS transform into highly persistent perfluorinated chemicals in the environment. Short-chain PFAS tend to be more water soluble and move more easily through soil to contaminate ground-water, surface water or drinking water.

On Friday, April 12, 2019, members of the AIPG IL-IN Section and invited guests will tour the operations of US Silica at Ottawa, IL. After field tours of the open pit operations and selected reclamation sites, participants will be given a look at the United States’ largest silica sand processing operation (described from USS’s website below). In the afternoon, participants can visit nearby Starved Rock State Park to hike and compare natural outcroppings with those seen in the mine. A late lunch at the "Cajun Connection" is another option to add spice to this day's events!

Energy Exposition
Attendees represent a wide range of services, including but not limited to, exploration, production, downstream and all phases of support to the industry. We have been privileged to have political attendees from the local community, city, county and state governments as well political luminaries such as former Vice President of the United States, Dick Cheney. In 2014 we were fortunate to have Vice President Dick Cheney as our Keynote Speaker. His daughter Liz (now U.S. Congresswoman Liz Cheney of Wyoming) also honored us by speaking at a couple of our events.
The Energy Exposition has educated tens of thousands of people in Gillette, Wyoming; Billings, Montana; and just recently Loveland, Colorado, over the last 19 years on procedures, technology, safety, environmental practices and equipment used in the oil and gas industry. Our doors have always been open to industry and non-industry attendees. Most of our exhibitors are from the oil and gas industry. We also welcome our participants from the wind, solar and other energy companies that support the oil and gas industry.

The global carbon dioxide (CO2) flux from subaerial volcanoes remains poorly quantified, limiting our understanding of the deep carbon cycle during geologic time and in modern Earth. Past attempts to extrapolate the global volcanic CO2 flux have been biased by observations being available for a relatively small number of accessible volcanoes. Here, we propose that the strong, but yet unmeasured, CO2 emissions from several remote degassing volcanoes worldwide can be predicted using regional/global relationships between the CO2/ST ratio of volcanic gases and whole-rock trace element compositions (e.g., Ba/La).

When the Arctic warmed after the ice age 10,000 years ago, it created perfect conditions for drought.
According to new research led by a University of Wyoming scientist, similar changes could be in store today because a warming Arctic weakens the temperature difference between the tropics and the poles. This, in turn, results in less precipitation, weaker cyclones and weaker mid-latitude westerly wind flow — a recipe for prolonged drought.

The mystery of methane on Mars may finally be solved as scientists April 1 confirmed the presence of the life-indicating gas on the Red Planet as well as where it might have come from. In the 15 years since a European probe reported traces of the gas in the Martian atmosphere, debate has raged over the accuracy of the readings showing methane, which on Earth is produced by simple lifeforms.

Much of the lightning that flickers around and within the ash plumes of erupting volcanoes is triggered by static electricity, which builds up when ash particles scrape against each other in flight. Now, a field study suggests Earth's natural radioactivity may also help volcanic plumes get electrically charged — even when those clouds contain little or no ash.

A review of the main approaches developed for sea ice classification using satellite imagery is presented. Satellite data are the main and very often only information source for sea ice classification and charting in the remote arctic regions. The main techniques used for ice classification and ice charting in several national ice services are considered. Advantages and disadvantages of various SAR data-based methods for ice classification are analyzed. It is shown that an increase of SAR technical abilities contributes to the enhancement of sea ice classification reliability. The possible further development of satellite data-based methods for ice classification is discussed.

Most hydrocarbon reservoirs contain faults, which are highly complex heterogeneous and anisotropic three-dimensional (3-D) volumes of deformed rock. A major technical challenge in full-field flow simulation is to represent the effects of 3-D fault zone structure within the two-dimensional (2-D) fault planar surfaces using the industry standard commercial reservoir flow simulator due to its limited functionality. Therefore, a new flow-based geometrical upscaling (FBGU) method has been developed for capturing the effects of 3D fault zone structures in conventional low-resolution upscaled flow simulation models.
