Join us for the 2022 National Conference in Marquette on the beautiful shores of the world's largest freshwater lake!
This year's meeting theme is "Geology: The Cornerstone of our Future." Geology plays a significant role in today's society and will become even more important in the years to come. Our reliance on basic resources and building materials such as sand and gravel for roads, limestone for concrete, iron for structural purposes, and other base metals for electronics and other applications will not diminish. In addition, the need for rare earth elements as well as reliable sources of fresh water are in high demand. We will explore these topics and more in what will be the perfect time to visit Michigan's Upper Peninsula.
Start making your plans and bring your family! Northern Michigan offers fantastic opportunities for exploration and time away from the daily routine.
Earn CEUs for attending the Executive Committee Meetings, Technical Sessions and Technical Field Trips!

AIPG Mentoring Program
AIPG
AIPG believes mentoring is integral to encouraging geoscientists throughout their careers. This can include discussions on many different topics, including but not limited to:
- specific geoscience topics or questions
- education and experience required for specific career tracks
- any geoscience topic of interest
- geoscience employment search
- selecting the best-suited geoscience career track
- work abroad experiences in geosciences
AIPG is setting up this mentor site to encourage one-on-one AIPG-member discussions. We encourage the mentor and mentee to include others in their discussions and research as needed. A mentor may or may not have applicable experience or knowledge related to a mentee's area of interest, but the mentor will help find information and/or an alternate mentor.
AIPG Members interested in becoming a Mentor can submit the online Mentor form.

Possible zero waste solutions for the remediation of PFAS — An overview of emerging onsite destruction technologies
PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are recalcitrant by nature and can be costly to remediate using traditional treatment strategies. These strategies typically lack an effective waste management strategy. In recent years, industry and research entities have made strides in developing new and innovative approaches to destroying PFAS onsite rather than having to dispose of high concentration waste at offsite treatment and/or disposal facilities. In this presentation, attendees will be provided an overview of these emerging technologies for the onsite destruction of PFAS waste streams that when incorporated into the primary treatment process/train have the potential to provide a zero "waste" outcome.

Research finds drought alters Mammoth Mountain's carbon dioxide emissions
Phys.org
Thirty years ago, on the flanks of a volcano in California's Sierra Nevada range, trees began to die en masse, suffocated at their roots by carbon dioxide seeping up from the mountain's depths after a swarm of small earthquakes.
The wave of tree deaths on Mammoth Mountain, which lies within one of the nation's largest active volcanic systems, prompted scientists to start monitoring the volcano's emissions more closely.

Astronomers discover 'geological wonderland' on Pluto
Yahoo! News
It's not just the air on Pluto that is cold — the volcanoes on the dwarf plant are frigid, too. According to a group of scientists on NASA's New Horizons mission team, which recently turned up new discoveries about the "geological wonderland," Pluto's volcanoes don't shoot out lava when they erupt.

First-of-its-kind detection of reduced human carbon dioxide emissions
Phys.org
For the first time, researchers have spotted short-term, regional fluctuations in atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) around the globe due to emissions from human activities.
Using a combination of NASA satellites and atmospheric modeling, the scientists performed a first-of-its-kind detection of human CO2 emissions changes.

Periodic volcanism triggered multiple Jurassic extinctions
ScienceDaily
A group of Finnish, Swedish, and Norwegian geologists provide critical new evidence for the timing of volcanic activity in the Karoo province, the largest of the Jurassic magma systems. The remnants of the province are widespread in southern Africa and Antarctica.
Severe environmental crises led to a series of large-scale extinction events in the Jurassic period 178-186 million years (myr) ago.

Testing how seaweed biofilters could improve Great Barrier Reef water quality
Phys.org
An innovative new solution using seaweed to help improve water quality on the Great Barrier Reef is progressing to the next exciting phase of research, with on-water trials beginning next month.
Researchers will test whether native seaweed species placed in strategic locations are effective at soaking up damaging pollutants from the water.
