AIPG

Hosted by AIPG National and the AIPG Wisconsin Section. Registration is open. Program
Workshop attendees will learn the history, chemistry, sampling techniques and current treatment options of PFAS, as well as developing regulatory proposals throughout the country. More than 4,700 PFAS (per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances) exist in the world today. Many PFAS transform into highly persistent perfluorinated chemicals in the environment. Short-chain PFAS tend to be more water soluble and move more easily through soil to contaminate ground-water, surface water or drinking water.

In Geoscience Currents #137, we examine the changes in U.S. federal funding of geoscience research from 1970-2017. In 2016, the geosciences accounted for 6.6% of federal research funding, which is well below its high of 10% in 1970. Also, within the geosciences, there have been substantial changes in the allocation of funding between atmospheric science, oceanography, geological sciences, and interdiciplinary geoscience. Read this Currents to find out more details about federal funding trends in the geosciences.

Wyoming State Geological Survey
The Wyoming State Geological Survey (WSGS) published a new map depicting the Teton fault, a potential source of large earthquakes. It is the most detailed mapping ever completed across the length of the fault, which spans the eastern base of the Teton Range in northwestern Wyoming.
The map is available as a free download on the WSGS publication website and for purchase as a printed version.

AGI
For more than 40 years, AGI's Data Sheets have been a critical tool for the geoscientist in the field, the lab, and the classroom. For decades its bright orange cover and three-ring binding were distinctive in the geoscience community. The book eventually evolved into its current, full-color and spiral bound format and the 5th edition, published in 2016, represents the work of over 240 experts worldwide. Now, AGI has made this ultimate field guide available in digital format. The Geoscience Handbook — Digital Edition comes in a PDF that is readable on any of your favorite devices (Android, iPhone, tablet, laptop, desktop). More than 470 pages of crisp, clear graphics and always a quick reference tool for key metrics and concepts, a guide to cornerstone papers and recent developments, as well as short tutorials on topics that may not be familiar to all geoscientists.

On Friday, April 12, 2019, members of the AIPG IL-IN Section and invited guests will tour the operations of US Silica at Ottawa, IL. After field tours of the open pit operations and selected reclamation sites, participants will be given a look at the United States’ largest silica sand processing operation (described from USS’s website below). In the afternoon, participants can visit nearby Starved Rock State Park to hike and compare natural outcroppings with those seen in the mine. A late lunch at the "Cajun Connection" is another option to add spice to this day's events!

Energy Exposition
Attendees represent a wide range of services, including but not limited to, exploration, production, downstream and all phases of support to the industry. We have been privileged to have political attendees from the local community, city, county and state governments as well political luminaries such as former Vice President of the United States, Dick Cheney. In 2014 we were fortunate to have Vice President Dick Cheney as our Keynote Speaker. His daughter Liz (now U.S. Congresswoman Liz Cheney of Wyoming) also honored us by speaking at a couple of our events.
The Energy Exposition has educated tens of thousands of people in Gillette, Wyoming; Billings, Montana; and just recently Loveland, Colorado, over the last 19 years on procedures, technology, safety, environmental practices and equipment used in the oil and gas industry. Our doors have always been open to industry and non-industry attendees. Most of our exhibitors are from the oil and gas industry. We also welcome our participants from the wind, solar and other energy companies that support the oil and gas industry.

One of the leading killers during explosive volcanic eruptions is a family of superheated gas, ash and debris known as pyroclastic density currents. These tumbling, turbulent paroxysms rush downslope at temperatures as high as 1,300 degrees Fahrenheit and at speeds often exceeding 50 miles an hour. Many pyroclastic density currents travel further than they should based on our present understanding of physics, with their long reach challenging scientists’ understanding of how they operate. Now, researchers may have found out why.

Some 15 years ago, a European probe measured traces of methane in the Martian atmosphere. Now, NASA's Curiosity rover and the European Space Agency's Mars Express have confirmed the gas' presence in the air above Gale Crater. "The presence of methane could enhance habitability and may even be a signature of life," researchers wrote in a new paper published in the journal Nature Geoscience.

Constraining the response time of the climate system to changes in North Atlantic Deep Water (NADW) formation is fundamental to improving climate and Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation predictability. Here we report a new synchronization of terrestrial, marine, and ice-core records, which allows the first quantitative determination of the response time of North Atlantic climate to changes in high-latitude NADW formation rate during the last deglaciation.

Headwater streams in the White Mountains, New Hampshire, have been shown to have downstream gradients of increasing pH and concentrations of base cations coupled with decreasing concentrations of aluminum. A two-stage acid neutralization model involving shallow soil exchange processes in headwaters coupled with deeper mineral weathering downstream had been proposed to explain these gradients. We conducted synoptic sampling of three headwater catchments in this region that showed variations in this longitudinal pattern, ranging from streams that remain acidic throughout their length to streams with circumneutral pH beginning at their source.

The winonaites are primitive achondrites that are associated with IAB iron meteorites. They provide valuable insights into differentiation processes on asteroids in the early Solar System. However, there is still little understanding of the lithological diversity as well as the structure of the winonaite parent asteroid. In this work, we report the petrologic texture and mineralogy of a suite of winonaites that exhibit a wide diversity of petrographic textures from primitive chondritic texture to coarse-grained equigranular texture.

With the increasing use of detrital geochronology data for provenance analyses, we have also developed new constraints on the age of otherwise undateable sedimentary deposits. Because a deposit can be no older than its youngest mineral constituent, the youngest defensible detrital mineral age defines the maximum depositional age of the sampled bed. Defining the youngest "defensible" age in the face of uncertainty (e.g., analytical and geological uncertainty, or sample contamination) is challenging.
