Watch this terrifying recreation of the deadly Oso mudslide

 In late March, a major landslide occurred a few miles east of Oso, Wash., killing at least 35 people and engulfing an area approximately one square mile. Geologists are now studying the event and they're baffled by its ferocity and speed. Using a new computer model, Richard Iverson of the U.S. Geological Survey estimated that the mass of mud, rocks and trees was traveling about 60 mph when it reached the river below.

Early Tibetan plateau larger and younger than previously thought

The Tibetan Plateau — the world's largest, highest, and flattest plateau — had a larger initial extent than previously documented. Known as the "Roof of the World," the Tibetan Plateau covers more than 970,000 square miles in Asia and India and reaches heights of over 15,000 feet. The plateau also contains a host of natural resources, including large mineral deposits and tens of thousands of glaciers and is the headwaters of many major drainage basins.

Skydiver narrowly missed by meteorite: 'World's 1st occurrence' claim geologists

A skydiver from Norway was narrowly missed by a meteorite midair in summer 2012. Anders Helstrup, along with other members of the Oslo Parachute Club, jumped from a plane and while releasing his parachute for a slowed descent above Hedmark, he noticed something that looked like a stone falling a few feet away from him. A video posted on YouTube shows how close Hesltrup came to being hit by the meteorite.

How Earth got its tectonic plates

While scientists have linked the movements Earth's ever-roaming tectonic plates to our planet's most violent events — quakes, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions — they have struggled to explain exactly how they came to exist in the first place. Now, in the journal Nature, two geophysicists have proposed that Earth's lithosphere was microscopically weakened and brittled by movement in viscous layers below it billions of years ago.

Hurricane forecasters predict calm season in Atlantic

Top forecasters at Colorado State University predict a calm Atlantic hurricane season this year, which may give coastal residents cause for concern if their last two annual forecasts are anything to go by. The meteorologists' report, used by insurance companies, emergency managers and the media to prepare for the next hurricane threats, forecasts nine tropical storms, of which only three will become hurricanes. Typically there are about 12 tropical storms and seven hurricanes a year.

Scientists identify world's largest gold crystal

Scientists have revealed that a heavy piece of gold discovered years ago in Venezuela has been identified as the world's largest single crystal of gold. The estimated worth of the rare lump of gold is $1.5 million. It weighs 217.78 grams and its size resembles a golf ball. For the first time, it has been possible to study the structure or atomic arrangement of gold crystals of this size, said Miami University geologist John Rakovan.

New research explains rich Puget Sound waters

A new study may help explain why the famously rich waters of the Puget Sound are able to support such an abundance of life, including shellfish, salmon runs and occasional pods of whales. Oceanographers at the University of Washing have made the first detailed measurements at the headwaters' source — a submarine canyon offshore from the strait that separates the U.S. and Canada and draws up nutrient-rich water from the deep ocean.
