Intraw
The EU-funded INTRAW project was launched in 2015 with the aim of mapping best practices and boosting cooperation opportunities related to raw materials between the EU and five technologically advanced non-EU countries (Australia, Canada, Japan, South Africa and the United States).
The project consortium now presents three reports that focus on raw materials research and innovation, education and outreach or industry and trade, in the five Reference Countries. These three reports underpin the development of a better understanding of the achievements made in these five countries in relation to the entire raw materials value chain. The operational report on research and innovation describes and compares the different innovation systems in Australia, Canada, Japan, South Africa and the United States, comprising — among others — the main role players, institutions and policies that drive research and innovation in the raw materials sector. The raw materials educational context in each of the Reference Countries is mapped in the operational analysis of education and outreach. The report on industry and trade notably includes the characterisation of industrial clusters related to raw materials in these countries and the way these clusters affect trade and global competition.

In the northern part of the Indonesian island of Sumatra lies the Toba caldera, a massive crater formed by what scientists think is the largest volcanic eruption ever experienced by humanity. The eruption, called the Youngest Toba Tuff supereruption, took place about 74,000 years ago. By dating zircon, a diamond-like gemstone, and other minerals in the area such as quartz, Reid and Vazquez have pieced together clues about the activity of magma below the surface prior to the supereruption.

Researchers at The University of Texas at Austin have identified glaciers in West Greenland that are most susceptible to thinning in the coming decades by analyzing how they're shaped. The research could help predict how much the Greenland Ice Sheet will contribute to future sea-level rise during the next century, a number that currently ranges from inches to feet.

As we've explored the Solar System, some items we're familiar with from Earth's geology have kept appearing in new places. Glaciers, volcanoes and geysers have all been found on other planets and moons. With all that's familiar, it's easy to forget that one of the defining features of Earth's geology — plate tectonics — is notably absent. There are some hints of it on the icy crust of Europa, but it would have to be powered by a different mechanism there. If there was an obvious candidate for hosting plates, it would be Venus.

Recently, Brigham Young University professors have unveiled a new species of dinosaur. This newly discovered dinosaur is called Moabosaurus Utahensis. The skeleton of Moabosaurus was excavated from the Dalton Wells Quarry, which is 20 kilometer northwest of Moab. This skeleton was about 125 million-years-old and assembled using bones extracted near Arches National Park.

In 2015, a drilling expedition staffed by scientists from India, Japan, and the United States discovered widespread, high-saturation accumulations of natural gas hydrate in the sediments of the Bay of Bengal. This expedition marked the first discovery of Indian Ocean methane hydrate deposits that might contain producible amounts of natural gas. Another highlight of the expedition was the unprecedented recovery of over 500 feet of sediments in pressure cores, which are specially designed to maintain sediments and their associated gas hydrates at the original sub-seafloor pressure conditions.
