Online registration is available now!
September 8-11, 2018 - Colorado Springs, Colorado
Colorado Springs Marriott, 5580 Tech Center Drive, Colorado Springs, CO 80919 - (719) 260-1800
Plan on attending AIPG's 2018 Annual Meeting in Colorado Springs. Our field trips will explore central Colorado including the Cripple Creek & Victor gold mine, the Portland cement plant and adjacent Niobrara Fm quarry, the upper Arkansas geothermal systems, the latest in SW South Park geology and the Wall Mountain Tuff, among others. The technical sessions will cover the full spectrum of geosciences; start thinking about your presentation. We're planning short courses on being an expert witness, the use of Rockware's software and preparing an AIPG/AGI GOLI course. We'll have a Student Career Day on Saturday, Sept. 8. Young professionals start working on a presentation on a project you're working on that will induce your employer to send you to the meeting; remember such presentations are also good marketing for your firm.
Submit an abstract for presentation at the conference. Call for abstracts available now!

We will be having our next meeting on Saturday, April 28, in Socorro, New Mexico. We will have a joint meeting with the professional section and the newly created New Mexico Tech student section, with special guest, Doug Bartlett, the AIPG National President. Details are still being worked out, but the current plan is to meet in the morning for a presentation by Doug at the NM Bureau of Geology, then have lunch, and then take a short field trip to look at some rocks (probably carbonatites in Lemitar). Watch for future emails with more details. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me, Shannon Williams, at swilliams@geo-logic.com.

April 21: Florida Waterfest — FAPG/AIPG Florida Section
April 21: AIPG Wisconsin Section Strategic Planning Meeting
April 4: AIPG Sonoma State University Student Chapter Meeting
Thank you to Sonoma State University Student Section for hosting the meeting. We had a great speaker and SSU graduate Tom Magney provided his assessment of the various industries that employ geologists and his take on those opportunities. He put a lot of time into his analysis and offered suggested career pathways for geologists.

RFG 2018

Exploration is fundamental to the supply of resources, whether we need to find water, minerals or energy. This conference offers an array of opportunities for participants to explore, seek new ideas or connections with people, acquire cutting-edge skills through short courses or field trips, or find inspiration in other aspects of geoscience. Pushing boundaries in all these ways will help us reach our collective goals of sustainability and build a prosperous future that is based on responsible resource development.
The plenary and keynote sessions will provide fertile ground for new ideas; everything from history of the earth, to how minerals and energy are linked, and a dialogue on ownership of resources. The diverse group of big thinkers and experts will provoke, inspire and challenge us to view resources in new ways.
- What does responsible mining look like?
- Who owns resources?
- What is the future of energy?
- What are the innovations and frontiers?
All these and more will inform the discussion at the Resources for Future Generations 2018 conference. The extensive program includes sessions and events organized by our partners, Geological Association of Canada (GAC), Mineralogical Association of Canada (MAC) and Association of Applied Geochemists (AAG), representing their annual meetings for 2018, a collaboration that adds depth to the conference breadth. Join us, along with our many technical partners, for an extraordinary event.
COGA
The Energy Summit proudly enters its 30th year with a focus on "Growth. Expectations. Opportunities." Will the innovations and advancements of tomorrow solve the issues that industry is grappling with today in board rooms or on investor calls, or in city council halls, statehouses or the global stage? Over two days, our speakers will explore the growth opportunities afforded to industry, the expectations that come with domestic and global leadership and the opportunities to provide a cleaner energy future, a safer industry and a safer world. Make sure to take advantage of our COGA Member Discount and early registration pricing.
Dates: Aug. 21-22.

On April 18, the USGS, along with approximately 60 partners, released a new fact sheet that summarizes a report from a larger study of what could happen during a major earthquake in the San Francisco Bay area along the Hayward Fault — arguably one of the most urbanized and interconnected areas in the nation. This study is called "The HayWired Earthquake Scenario."

Paleomagnetic records obtained from lake sediments provide important constraints on geomagnetic field behavior. Secular variation recorded in sediments is used in global geomagnetic field models, particularly over longer timescales when archeomagnetic data are sparse. In addition, by matching distinctive secular variation features, lake sediment paleomagnetic records have proven useful for dating sediments on various time scales.

Computing a better crustal thickness model is still a necessary improvement in Antarctica. In this remote continent where almost all the bedrock is covered by the ice sheet, seismic investigations do not reach a sufficient spatial resolution for geological and geophysical purposes. Here, we present a global map of Antarctic crustal thickness computed from space gravity observations.

Traditionally, geoid determination is applied by Stokes’ formula with gravity anomalies after removal of the attraction of the topography by a simple or refined Bouguer correction, and restoration of topography by the primary indirect topographic effect (PITE) after integration. This technique leads to an error of the order of the quasigeoid-to-geoid separation, which is mainly due to an incomplete downward continuation of gravity from the surface to the geoid. Alternatively, one may start from the modern surface gravity anomaly and apply the direct topographic effect on the anomaly, yielding the no-topography gravity anomaly.

The case of soil contamination by heavy metals in environment shows an increasing amount along with the constructions and development period that has been done. The identification of heavy metal content in the field is extremely hard to be done without a laboratory activity. Therefore, it needs a quick and non-destructive approach or method to identify the metal content of the soil in the field.

In recent decades, the Rocky Mountains (RM) have undergone significant changes associated with anthropogenic activities and natural disturbances. These changes have the potential to alter primary productivity and biomass carbon storage. In particular, dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in RM streams can affect heterotrophic processes, act as a source for the nutrient cycle, absorb sunlight radiation, alter metal transport and can promote the production of carcinogenic byproducts during water treatment.
