Plan on attending AIPG's 2018 Annual Meeting in Colorado Springs. Our field trips will explore central Colorado including the Cripple Creek & Victor gold mine, the Portland cement plant and adjacent Niobrara Fm quarry, the upper Arkansas geothermal systems, the latest in SW South Park geology and the Wall Mountain Tuff, among others. The technical sessions will cover the full spectrum of geosciences; start thinking about your presentation. We're planning short courses on being an expert witness, the use of Rockware's software and preparing an AIPG/AGI GOLI course. We'll have a Student Career Day on Saturday, Sept. 8. Young professionals start working on a presentation on a project you're working on that will induce your employer to send you to the meeting; remember such presentations are also good marketing for your firm.

We will be having our next meeting on Saturday, April 28, in Socorro, New Mexico. We will have a joint meeting with the professional section and the newly created New Mexico Tech student section, with special guest, Doug Bartlett, the AIPG National President. Details are still being worked out, but the current plan is to meet in the morning for a presentation by Doug at the NM Bureau of Geology, then have lunch, and then take a short field trip to look at some rocks (probably carbonatites in Lemitar). On April 18, the USGS, along with approximately 60 partners, released a new fact sheet that summarizes a report from a larger study of what could happen during a major earthquake in the San Francisco Bay area along the Hayward Fault — arguably one of the most urbanized and interconnected areas in the nation. Paleomagnetic records obtained from lake sediments provide important constraints on geomagnetic field behavior. Secular variation recorded in sediments is used in global geomagnetic field models, particularly over longer timescales when archeomagnetic data are sparse. In this remote continent where almost all the bedrock is covered by the ice sheet, seismic investigations do not reach a sufficient spatial resolution for geological and geophysical purposes. Traditionally, geoid determination is applied by Stokes’ formula with gravity anomalies after removal of the attraction of the topography by a simple or refined Bouguer correction, and restoration of topography by the primary indirect topographic effect (PITE) after integration. This technique leads to an error of the order of the quasigeoid-to-geoid separation, which is mainly due to an incomplete downward continuation of gravity from the surface to the geoid. Alternatively, one may start from the modern surface gravity anomaly and apply the direct topographic effect on the anomaly, yielding the no-topography gravity anomaly.

This study demonstrates the capability of Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) sensor data to remotely map industrial carbonate rocks known as the "Oman exotics" of the Sultanate of Oman. We measured reflectance spectra of marble using a PIMA spectrometer and studied their spectral absorptions distinguishing calcite from spectral absorptions of dolomite of the same region.

In recent decades, the Rocky Mountains (RM) have undergone significant changes associated with anthropogenic activities and natural disturbances. These changes have the potential to alter primary productivity and biomass carbon storage. In particular, dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in RM streams can affect heterotrophic processes, act as a source for the nutrient cycle, absorb sunlight radiation, alter metal transport and can promote the production of carcinogenic byproducts during water treatment.
