The AIPG Headquarters wish to express our sadness at the loss of John M. Stewart, CPG-11115, who passed away on April 22.
John was an active member of AIPG and currently an Advisory Board Representative on the Executive Committee. John was a pleasure to work with, and he will be greatly missed.
He set his sights on a career in geology and achieved his objective. John enjoyed a long and fulfilling career as a geologist, becoming Chief Geologist for ECS Southeast, LLC. He was an active member of the American Institute of Professional Geologists and the Geological Society of America. Throughout his life he coupled his passion for stewarding the environment with hard work and never looked back.
The funeral services were held at First Baptist Church, in Kernersville, North Carolina, on April 27.

American Geosciences Institute
The American Geosciences Institute (AGI) is conducting a survey to determine the significance of geologic map data in the economy. For the purpose of this study, geologic map data includes not only traditional bedrock geologic maps, but also maps of any data of a generally immutable property of a location, such as gravity, magnetics, hazards/flood risk, etc. This survey will take approximately 15 minutes to complete. The results of this survey will be compiled into a freely-available public report, with a planned availability by mid-2018. This survey will close at 11:59 p.m. EDT on May 31.

American Geosciences Institute
The American Geosciences Institute (AGI) is pleased to announce the publication of Status of Recent Geoscience Graduates 2017. This report details the results of AGI's Geoscience Student Exit Survey for academic year 2016-2017, documenting trends in geoscience coursework, student experiences, and the immediate career plans of the new graduates. This is the fifth consecutive year of this survey and report, and with this release, consistent trends have emerged about the experiences of postsecondary geoscience students.
AGI's Geoscience Student Exit Survey details responses from this year's graduates as well as in selected analyses, time-series or aggregated responses detailing identified trends. The aggregated responses are visualized in several ways, including a Sankey diagram which shows the flow of students through the higher education system while underscoring the value of field experiences, research and internships as stepping stones to employment.
Over the past five years, this report has shown that geoscience graduates at all degree levels tend to receive a strong technical background in the geosciences, but in 2017, hiring of recent graduates at graduation was at its lowest for all degree levels in the last five years. This year also had the highest percentage of master's graduates planning to work on an additional graduate degree instead of entering the workforce. A number of factors may be attributed to these changes, including a slow recovery in the resources industries and the displacement of some jobs with automation.

Modeling has been used in the study of volcanic systems for more than 100 years, building upon the approach first applied by Sir James Hall in 1815. Arsenic contamination of groundwater in the Southern Gulf Coast Aquifer of Texas is a critical public health concern as much of the area is rural in nature with decentralized water supplies. Previous studies have pointed to volcanic deposits as the regional source of arsenic but no definitive or reliable predictors of arsenic maximum contaminant level (MCL) exceedance have been identified. In this study, we have studied the effect of various hydrogeochemical parameters as well as soil and land-use variables on arsenic MCL exceedance using logistic regression (LR) techniques.

Paleomagnetic records obtained from lake sediments provide important constraints on geomagnetic field behavior. Secular variation recorded in sediments is used in global geomagnetic field models, particularly over longer timescales when archeomagnetic data are sparse. In addition, by matching distinctive secular variation features, lake sediment paleomagnetic records have proven useful for dating sediments on various time scales.

The Qarhan Salt Lake area is the Quaternary depocenter of the Qaidam Basin, and carries thick lacustrine sediments, as well as rich potassium and magnesium salt deposits. The abundant resources and thick sediments in this lake provide an ideal place for the study of biogas formation and preservation, salt lake evolution, and the uplift of the Tibetan Plateau. In this study, we attempt to construct a paleomagnetic and 230Th age model and to obtain information on tectonic activity and salt lake evolution through detailed studies on a 1300-m-long drill core (15DZK01) from the northwestern margin of the Qarhan Salt Lake area (Dongling Lake).

Pockmarks are seabed depressions developed by fluid flow processes that can be found in vast numbers in many marine and lacustrine environments. Manual mapping of these features based on geophysical data is, however, extremely time-consuming and subjective. Here, we present results from a semi-automated mapping toolbox developed to allow more efficient and objective mapping of pockmarks.

Modern geological techniques have resulted in vast and growing databases of digital images and video sequences of rocks, which are available for the use of researchers. The number of database images continues to increase exponentially, creating a need for techniques that will enable the automation of data set management. Desired techniques include query by image, a topic that has been extensively elaborated on in the literature recently. Unfortunately, using such techniques in the geological sciences has been very sporadic and insufficient.

The southern Caribbean Sea experiences strong coastal upwelling between December and April due to the seasonal strengthening of the trade winds. A second upwelling was recently detected in the southeastern Caribbean during June–August, when local coastal wind intensities weaken. Using synoptic satellite measurements and in situ data, this mid-year upwelling was characterized in terms of surface and subsurface temperature structures, and its mechanisms were explored.

The Mayo Salah pluton, which is located in the North-Cameroon domain of Central African Bold Belt (CAFB), is emplaced as a laccolith in volcano-sedimentary schists of Poli series, and displays features of Rare-metal Granite (RMG). It is made of two main rock groups: the metaluminous barren muscovite granite (MsG) and the Nb-Ta bearing peraluminous leucogranite (MsL) which expresses four subtypes.
