Natural Source Zone Depletion (NSZD): What is it and where does it fit into petroleum napl site management?
AIPG
Webinar was held on May 8, hosted by GHD.

Recent years have brought a new understanding of the potential magnitude and importance of natural LNAPL biodegradation (referred to as Natural Source Zone Depletion or NSZD) in the remediation and management of petroleum-contaminated sites as evidenced by contemporary guidance from the American Petroleum Institute (API) and the Interstate Technology & Regulatory Council (ITRC) in the U.S., and CRC-CARE in Australia. It is now understood that most of the petroleum degradation happening at LNAPL sites will be manifested through observable changes in LNAPL composition over time, soil gas content and/or vadose zone temperature profiles.

Association of Environmental & Engineering Geologists 2020 Virtual Annual Meeting
AEG
The Association of Environmental & Engineering Geologists (AEG) has been monitoring the ongoing situation with respect to the COVID-19 virus, with our members, friends and 2020 Annual Meeting attendees' health and safety as a top priority. It is with sincere regret that, for the first time in AEG's history, we have no choice but to cancel the in-person 2020 Annual Meeting, which was due to take place this September in Portland, Oregon. The Governor of Oregon has mandated that no large gatherings can take place through September 2020.

The in-person Portland Annual Meeting has been rescheduled to September 19-24, 2023 at the same hotel, the Portland Marriott Downtown Waterfront following the 2021 Annual Meeting in San Antonio, Texas, and the 2022 Annual Meeting in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Discovery of unknown hydrogen in mid-ocean ridge points to hidden biosphere
Duke University via Phys.org
By providing the first estimate of how much hydrogen is available to fuel microbial life in the sunless sub-seafloor crust beneath the Mid-Ocean Ridge (MOR), a new Duke University-led study sheds light on one of Earth's least understood biospheres. It may also help illuminate how similar conditions could support life in other extreme environments, from distant planets to early Earth itself.

Macroalgal metabolism and lateral carbon flows can create significant carbon sinks
Biogeosciences
Macroalgal beds have drawn attention as one of the vegetated coastal ecosystems that act as atmospheric CO2 sinks. Although macroalgal metabolism as well as inorganic and organic carbon flows are important pathways for CO2 uptake by macroalgal beds, the relationships between macroalgal metabolism and associated carbon flows are still poorly understood.

A new method to improve the accuracy of remotely sensed data for wetland water balance estimates
Journal of Hydrology: Regional Studies
Uncertainties in water balance calculations can arise from errors associated with each of the budget input terms: precipitation, evapotranspiration and inflows/outflows. However, uncertainties associated with the accuracy of the surface storage calculation have seldom been the focus of previous water balance studies.

New model to accurately date historic earthquakes
Portland State University via ScienceDaily
Three earthquakes in the Monterey Bay Area, occurring in 1838, 1890 and 1906, happened without a doubt on the San Andreas Fault, according to a new paper by a Portland State University researcher. The paper, "New Insights into Paleoseismic Age Models on the Northern San Andreas Fault: Charcoal In-built ages and Updated Earthquake Correlations," was recently published in the Bulletin of the Seismological Society of America.
