American Geosciences Institute
The American Geosciences Institute (AGI) and the American Institute of Professional Geologists (AIPG) are pleased to announce the next course in our Geoscience Online Learning Initiative (GOLI) webinar series on Geoscience Ethics: Geoscience Ethics Case Histories: Conflicts of Interest #1.
Conflicts of interest are the most commonly encountered professional ethics issues. Dealing with them can be relatively easy or potentially very difficult depending on the facts of any particular case. But first the conflict of interest must be recognized. This webinar will help you recognize conflicts of interest and will provide discussion of the issues involved with specific cases.
This one-hour webinar will take place on May 31, at 1 p.m. EDT. Participants will earn 0.1 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) through AIPG for attending the event. The webinar will feature a panel of experts who will discuss the ethics behind conflicts of interest in the geosciences. Our panelists are:
- David M. Abbott Jr., AIPG-CPG, AIPG Ethics Columnist & Ethics Committee Chairman Emeritus
- G.W. "Skip" Hobbs, Ammonite Resources, DPA-CPG, Past President AGI and AAPG's DPA
- Barbara Murphy, AIPG-CPG, Clear Creek Associates, Past President AIPG
- Sara Pearson, AIPG-CPG, Michigan DEQ-RRD, AIPG Ethics Committee Chair
- Jon Price, AIPG-CPG, Nevada State Geologist Emeritus, Past President AIPG, AASG, SEcG and GSA
- Betsy Suppes, DPA-CPG, Forgedale Consulting

Resources for Future Generations 2018
We've been excited about the Resources for Future Generations 2018. conference but reading through the Preliminary Program has got us inspired!
RFG2018 aims to provide participants with a program that will explore six vital and inter-related themes that are multidisciplinary in nature: the Earth, Energy, Minerals, Water, Resources and Society, and Education and Knowledge.
The four-day technical program has more than 1,500 authors already committed to the conference, with 50 percent of the presenters from Canada and the other 50% from all other regions of the world. It’s a truly impressive cohort from a vast array of disciplines.
The topics of both keynotes and technical sessions are central to the United Nations 2030 Sustainable Development Goals. RFG2018 will provide an unprecedented view of the earth and the availability of resources for human sustainability. Expect big picture thinking, dialogue, technical presentations, and social interaction. Established science, innovation, policy, social benefits, and impact will all be part of RFG2018.
Check out the preliminary program here. #RFG2018

Volcano Discovery
Throughout May 20, Kilauea's eruption continued at a moderate level along the northeast end of the active fissure system at the lower east rift zone. In the early afternoon, HVO reported that there was still active spattering from fissures 6 and 17. At the same time large lava flows continued to be erupted from fissure 20, two of which reached the ocean the previous night. A new development occurred early in the morning of May 20 when a large crack opened up underneath the east lava flow feeding the ocean entry, diverting the lava from the channel into underground voids.

Lava has complex geochemical characteristics based on differences in eruption centers, eruptive events and flow emplacement. Characterization of lava is useful for understanding the geological conditions of a volcanic region. To complement geochemical methods, rock magnetic methods are being used to analyze lava. To explore the potential uses of rock magnetic methods for lava characterization, a series of magnetic measurements were completed in lava samples from eight locations in the Ijen Volcanic Complex (IVC) in Banyuwangi, East Java, Indonesia.

Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) are among the most widely used engineered nanoparticles (ENPs) in various commercial sectors to achieve both social and economic benefits. The post-use release of these NPs to the environment is inevitable, and may pose threat to the human and eco-system. In the present study, we investigated the influence of single and multiple environmental factors on sedimentation behavior of ZnO NPs.
