American Geosciences Institute
The American Geosciences Institute (AGI) and the American Institute of Professional Geologists (AIPG) are pleased to announce the next course in our Geoscience Online Learning Initiative (GOLI) webinar series on Geoscience Ethics: Geoscience Ethics Case Histories: Conflicts of Interest #1.
Conflicts of interest are the most commonly encountered professional ethics issues. Dealing with them can be relatively easy or potentially very difficult depending on the facts of any particular case. But first the conflict of interest must be recognized. This webinar will help you recognize conflicts of interest and will provide discussion of the issues involved with specific cases.
This one-hour webinar will take place on May 31, at 1 p.m. EDT. Participants will earn 0.1 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) through AIPG for attending the event. The webinar will feature a panel of experts who will discuss the ethics behind conflicts of interest in the geosciences. Our panelists are:
- David M. Abbott Jr., AIPG-CPG, AIPG Ethics Columnist & Ethics Committee Chairman Emeritus
- G.W. "Skip" Hobbs, Ammonite Resources, DPA-CPG, Past President AGI and AAPG's DPA
- Barbara Murphy, AIPG-CPG, Clear Creek Associates, Past President AIPG
- Sara Pearson, AIPG-CPG, Michigan DEQ-RRD, AIPG Ethics Committee Chair
- Jon Price, AIPG-CPG, Nevada State Geologist Emeritus, Past President AIPG, AASG, SEcG and GSA
- Betsy Suppes, DPA-CPG, Forgedale Consulting

Resources for Future Generations 2018
We've been excited about the Resources for Future Generations 2018. conference but reading through the Preliminary Program has got us inspired!
RFG2018 aims to provide participants with a program that will explore six vital and inter-related themes that are multidisciplinary in nature: the Earth, Energy, Minerals, Water, Resources and Society, and Education and Knowledge.
The four-day technical program has more than 1,500 authors already committed to the conference, with 50 percent of the presenters from Canada and the other 50% from all other regions of the world. It’s a truly impressive cohort from a vast array of disciplines.
The topics of both keynotes and technical sessions are central to the United Nations 2030 Sustainable Development Goals. RFG2018 will provide an unprecedented view of the earth and the availability of resources for human sustainability. Expect big picture thinking, dialogue, technical presentations, and social interaction. Established science, innovation, policy, social benefits, and impact will all be part of RFG2018.
Check out the preliminary program here. #RFG2018

The evolution of micro-cracks in rocks under different strain rates is of great importance for a better understanding of the mechanical properties of rocks under complex stress states. In the present study, a series of tests were carried out under various strain rates, ranging from creep tests to intermediate strain rate tests, so as to observe the evolution of micro-cracks in rock and to investigate the influence of the strain rate on the deformation and strength properties of rocks.

The morphology and the activity of a submarine caldera, Avyssos, at the northern part of Nisyros volcano in the South Aegean Sea (Greece), has been studied by means of remotely-operated underwater vehicle dives. The recorded time series of temperature and conductivity over the submarine volcano have been analyzed in terms of the generalized moments method. The findings of the mathematical analysis shed light on the volcanic activity, but also on the morphology (shape) of the submarine volcano.

River discharge is a critical variable in many aspects of hydrology, particularly river mechanics. Due to the importance of river discharge, the standards for performing measurements are already established. In the extreme environmental conditions of breakup in Arctic regions, field crews face significant challenges in carrying out measurements, including risks to personnel, equipment safety and river access difficulties. The use of a helicopter in performing river discharge measurements with these challenges provides an alternative to using a boat.

To better understand the evolutionary characteristics of pore structure in marine shale with high thermal maturity, a natural Longmaxi marine shale sample from south China with a high equivalent vitrinite reflectance value (Ro = 2.03 percent) was selected to conduct an anhydrous pyrolysis experiment (500–750 degrees Celsius), and six artificial shale samples (pyrolysis products) spanning a maturity range from Ro = 2.47 percent to 4.87 percent were obtained.
