EFGeoMentoring: Professional career mentoring and coaching for geoscientists
European Federation of Geologists
Mentoring has proved to be beneficial both for mentees and mentors at all career stages. EFG is therefore extending its current early career mentoring programme and is from now on offering mentoring and coaching services to mid-career and senior geoscience professionals. The new EFGeoMentoring scheme aims at increasing international networking and supporting the life-long learning and CPD requirements of experienced geoscience professionals. It allows mentees to benefit from insider knowledge about work perspectives in other geosciences sectors and countries.

As a complementary service, we aim at providing mentees with access to a database of professional coaches who may advise on specific aspects relating to their career planning. The EFGeoMentoring scheme is running on a continuous basis, matching mentees and mentors upon demand. Participants collaborate over a fixed period of nine months.

GSA webinar: Weathering the Storm in the Current Oil and Gas Crisis
Geological Society of America
The Geological Society of America (GSA) will be hosting a free webinar, Weathering the Storm in the Current Oil and Gas Crisis, on Wednesday, June 10 at 11 a.m. MDT.

This webinar is a framework presentation and discussion that attempts to put in perspective the severity of the current 2020 energy crisis and what one might do now to plan for the future. The crisis of 2020 is just one of eight previous economic storms that have occurred between 1970 and 2020. As geoscientists, we identify the downturns as economic sequence boundaries that have happened multiple times over a 40-year period during the course of our collective careers.

    48 years later NASA's Apollo 17 just found a moon-melting meteorite of dinosaur-killing size
    Forbes
Was the moon struck by the kind of meteorite that ended the reign of the dinosaurs on Earth? That event 66 million years ago saw a 6-9 milewide meteorite or comet strike Earth close to Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula and leave a scar now known as Chicxulub crater. The same thing may have happened on the moon according to a new paper published in the journal Nature Astronomy by a group of international scientists led by the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM).

Airborne science discovers complex geomorphic controls on Bornean forests
    Arizona State University via ScienceDaily
Tropical forests contain some of the most biodiverse and dynamic ecosystems in the world. Environmental conditions such as precipitation, temperature, and soils shape the biota of the landscape. This influence is especially noticeable when comparing the towering trees found in low elevation forests to the hardier, shorter ones found at the top of tropical mountains. Together, these factors create an ever-changing and heterogeneous ecosystem, with each niche harboring different species of uniquely adapted trees.

Distribution and transport of thermal energy within magma-hydrothermal systems
    Geosciences
Proximity to magma bodies is generally acknowledged as providing the energy source for hot hydrothermal reservoirs. Hence, it is appropriate to think of a "magma–hydrothermal system" as an entity, rather than as separate systems. Repeated coring of Kilauea Iki lava lake on Kilauea Volcano, Hawaii, has provided evidence of an impermeable, conductive layer, or magma–hydrothermal boundary (MHB), between a hydrothermal system and molten rock.

Surficial geology of Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, Michigan
    Journal of Maps
Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan along the southern shore of Lake Superior. The park spans approximately 300 km2 and is almost fully incorporated within the ten 7.5-minute quadrangles presented in this new, detailed surficial geology map. The western quadrangles are mainly characterized by thin accumulations of undifferentiated Quaternary sediment above shallow bedrock while the eastern quadrangles mostly show thick accumulations of various glacial outwash units.

Researchers date age of the oldest-known forest in West Junggar region, China
    Phys.org
As one of the five major extinction events in Earth history, the Frasnian-Famennian boundary (FFB) crisis caused dramatic reductions in marine and terrestrial diversity. The effects of this event on terrestrial ecosystems are not well understood due to the limited preservation of terrestrial sedimentary rocks and the relative scarcity of plant fossils. Besides, the stratigraphic position of the FFB remains unclear.
