Doug Bartlett (National AIPG President) and Aaron Johnson (AIPG Executive Director) attended the European Federation of Geologists (EFG) meeting held from May 14 to 20, in Cesme-Izmir, Turkey. The conference was titled "Epithermal Gold Deposits of Western Anatolia, Turkey" and included two field trips and a day of talks regarding Turkey's gold mining industry. One of the field trips went to the Biga Peninsula and included a visit to several epithermal gold deposits, and a trip to the ancient ruins of Troy and Pergamon. The second field trip was to the Efemcukuru Gold mine near Izmir where several attendees including Mr. Bartlett were given an underground tour of this state-of-the-art mining operation. EFG members also met to discuss various issues relevant to the EFG and the profession of geology. Mr. Johnson participated in a panel discussion regarding challenges and opportunities for the future of gold mining in Turkey and Mr. Bartlett gave EFG members a brief overview of issues of importance to AIPG. Of note, the EFG is adopting aspects of AIPG's continuing professional development model. The conference was attended by about 40 geologists from all over Europe.

American Geosciences Institute
EFG and the American Institute of Professional Geologists (AIPG) have recently signed an agreement advancing the international recognition of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) programs.
EFG now officially recognizes, within its own CPD system, the points (CEUs) awarded via the AGI/AIPG Geoscience Online Learning Initiative GOLI. GOLI offers indeed a variety of courses that are pertinent for people outside the United States and can provide you with an additional opportunity to fulfil your annual CPD requirements.
In exchange for this now officialised recognition by EFG, the course providers offer the same registration conditions to European Geologist title holders as to Competent Persons registered with the AIPG.
The next GOLI webinar "Geoscience Ethics Case Histories: Conflicts of Interest #1" will take place on 31 May at 1 p.m. EDT. Participants will earn 0.1 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) for attending this one-hour event. The webinar will feature a panel of experts who will discuss the ethics behind conflicts of interest in the geosciences.

The EFG Annual report 2017 has been released.
2017 was the last year of EFG's Strategic Plan for the period 2014 to 2017 and the Annual Report presents the main outcomes for each of the strategy's seven action plans: supporting EFG Members, European Network, Global Network, EurGeol as Competent Person, Services, Projects, and Communication.
You can find more information about the report here.
We kindly ask for your help in disseminating the Annual Report among your members.

Managing Groundwater Storage
Wednesday, July 18, 2 p.m. EDT | 1 hour
Register for this free webinar.
Series: AGI Policy & Critical Issues Webinar
This 1 hour AGI Critical Issues webinar will introduce the geoscience of managing groundwater storage and recharge, discuss groundwater storage policies and research in California and Texas, and review case studies and potential future developments.
CEUs / CECs:
Webinar attendees may apply to receive 0.1 CEUs through the American Institute of Professional Geologists for a nominal fee. For more information, please apply here.
Certified floodplain managers who check the CFM status box during registration may receive 1 CEC from the Association of State Floodplain Managers; you do not need to use the CEU link above.
Background:
Groundwater is a critically important source of water in the U.S., supplying fresh water for drinking supplies, agricultural irrigation, and streams, rivers, and ecosystems. However, groundwater is becoming increasingly depleted in most aquifers around the country, with impacts including shrinking aquifer storage capacities, land subsidence (and associated impacts like higher flood risk), and declining freshwater resources for communities and ecosystems. To mitigate and reverse the depletion of groundwater storage in local aquifers, many communities are turning to managed aquifer recharge (MAR) and aquifer storage and recovery (ASR). MAR and ASR practices vary depending on local geology, groundwater and recharge water composition, local land use practices, and water use requirements. Implementing MAR and ASR requires careful planning to both maximize groundwater replenishment and protect groundwater supplies from contamination.
Our speakers are:
Timothy K. Parker, PG, CEG, CHG. Principal Hydrogeologist, Parker Groundwater
Graham Fogg, Professor of Hydrogeology, University of California, Davis
Van Kelley, Senior VP, Principal Hydrogeologist, Intera Geoscience & Engineering Solutions

Geosciences
The study of the discontinuity between the Earth crust and upper mantle, the so-called Moho, and of the lithospheric architecture in general, has several important applications in exploration geophysics. For instance, it is used to facilitate the inversion of seismic-related data, in order to obtain important information on the sedimentary layers or to study the Earth's heat flux. In this paper, the Levant crustal structure is being investigated starting from the inversion of gravity disturbances coming from a global geopotential field model based on ESA GOCE satellite mission integrated with seismic derived information.

Some of the highest density pockmark fields in the world have been observed on the northwest Australian continental shelf (greater than 700/km2) where they occur in muddy, organic-rich sediment around carbonate banks and paleochannels. Here we developed a semi-automated method to map and quantify the form and density of these pockmark fields (approximately 220,000 pockmarks) and characterize their geochemical, sedimentological and biological properties to provide insight into their formative processes.
