AIPG believes mentoring is integral to encouraging geoscientists throughout their careers. This can include discussions on many different topics, including but not limited to:
- specific geoscience topics or questions
- education and experience required for specific career tracks
- any geoscience topic of interest
- geoscience employment search
- selecting the best-suited geoscience career track
- work abroad experiences in geosciences
AIPG is setting up this mentor site to encourage one-on-one AIPG-member discussions. We encourage the mentor and mentee to include others in their discussions and research as needed. A mentor may or may not have applicable experience or knowledge related to a mentee's area of interest, but the mentor will help find information and/or an alternate mentor.
AIPG Members interested in becoming a Mentor can submit the online Mentor form.

Looking for used, older water level data loggers for sea-level rise research

How quickly will sea level rise? International and federal agencies (IPCC, WCRP, NOAA, USGS, FEMA, NASA), and others have developed sea level rise projection viewers (Figure 1). Although these sea-level rise screening tools are valuable for insights about the future, the vulnerability related to sea-level rise and extreme rain for low-lying coastal communities is critical to assess at a geospatial and temporal scale useful for local planning and sea-level rise mitigation purposes. The key to increase information for community-based sea level rise mitigation measures is to make local observations and acquire data at an appropriate scale.

Event participants will be offered field trip options to Bluff Natural Areas or Karst Areas, and a Cruise on the Mississippi River to #7 Dam.

Scientists announce a breakthrough in determining life's origin on Earth — and maybe Mars

Scientists at the Foundation for Applied Molecular Evolution announced today that ribonucleic acid (RNA), an analog of DNA that was likely the first genetic material for life, spontaneously forms on basalt lava glass. Such glass was abundant on Earth 4.35 billion years ago. Similar basalts of this antiquity survive on Mars today.
"Communities studying the origins of life have diverged in recent years," remarked Steven Benner, a co-author of the study appearing online in the journal Astrobiology.

Researchers tapped again for NASA moon mission, set to explore mysterious domes

A team of researchers from the University of Central Florida will be exploring an unknown and mysterious region of the moon.
Two UCF planetary scientists, Kerri Donaldson Hanna and Adrienne Dove, have been asked to lead a $35 million mission which would land a spacecraft over the Gruithuisen Domes — an unexplored part of the moon that has left NASA scientists scratching their heads, according to a NASA press release.

Great timing, supercomputer upgrade lead to successful forecast of volcanic eruption

In the fall of 2017, geology professor Patricia Gregg and her team had just set up a new volcanic forecasting modeling program on the Blue Waters and iForge supercomputers. Simultaneously, another team was monitoring activity at the Sierra Negra volcano in the Galapagos Islands, Ecuador. One of the scientists on the Ecuador project, Dennis Geist of Colgate University, contacted Gregg, and what happened next was the fortuitous forecast of the June 2018 Sierra Negra eruption five months before it occurred.

Earth's magnetic poles not likely to flip: Study

The emergence of a mysterious area in the South Atlantic where the geomagnetic field strength is decreasing rapidly, has led to speculation that Earth is heading towards a magnetic polarity reversal. However, a new study that pieces together evidence stretching back 9,000 years, suggests that the current changes aren't unique, and that a reversal may not be in the cards after all. The study is published in PNAS.
