Volcanic record of the last geomagnetic reversal in a lava flow sequence from the Azores
Frontiers in Earth Science
We present paleomagnetic and geochronological data of 25 stacked lava flows from São Miguel Island (Azores) that were emplaced during the last geomagnetic reversal (Matuyama-Brunhes, M-B). The characteristic direction of natural remanent magnetization was isolated through alternating field and/or thermal demagnetization.

Assessment of geotechnical seismic isolation (GSI) as a mitigation technique for seismic hazard events
Geosciences
Geotechnical seismic isolation (GSI) has emerged as a potential technique to mitigate the effects of earthquakes, with many applications to structural configurations, such as bridges and buildings. It consists of absorbing the seismic energy from the soil to the superstructure by interposing a superficial soil layer in order to reduce the accelerations that filter from the soil to the structure.

Using worldwide GPS data to study changes in Earth's crust, from the Ice Age to today
Nevada Today
By collecting and analyzing Global Positioning System (GPS) data from stations around the world and satellites in space, Geoff Blewitt, professor of geosciences in the University of Nevada, Reno's Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology, is able to study changes in the Earth's crust with great precision. The result is a series of significant discoveries, any one of which has changed scientific understanding and offers implications for the way we live and think. Considered together, they mark an impressive career and body of research.

Discovery of ancient super-eruptions indicates the Yellowstone hotspot may be waning
Geological Society of America via ScienceDaily
Researchers report two newly identified super-eruptions associated with the Yellowstone hotspot track, including what they believe was the volcanic province's largest and most cataclysmic event. The results indicate the hotspot, which today fuels the famous geysers, mudpots, and fumaroles in Yellowstone National Park, may be waning in intensity.

New model shows how diamond-carrying rocks formed in Northern Alberta
University of Alberta via ScienceDaily
A new study by University of Alberta geologists is proposing a new model for explaining the eruption of diamond-bearing kimberlites in Northern Alberta. The research demonstrates that 90 to 70 million years ago, the movement of an ancient slab of oceanic rocks buried hundreds of kilometres beneath Earth's surface caused the eruption of diamond-bearing kimberlite in Northern Alberta.
