Our field trips will explore central Colorado including the Cripple Creek and Victor gold mine, the Portland cement plant and adjacent Niobrara Formation quarry, the upper Arkansas geothermal systems, the latest in SW South Park geology, and the Wall Mountain Tuff, among others. The technical sessions will cover the full spectrum of geosciences; start thinking about your presentation. We're planning short courses on being an expert witness, the use of Rockware's software, and preparing an AIPG/AGI GOLI course. We'll have an Association of Women Geoscientists (AWG) Workshop and Student Career Workshop on Saturday, Sept. 8. Young professionals start working on a presentation on a project you're working on that will induce your employer to send you to the meeting; remember such presentations are also good marketing for your firm. We're arranging trips to the Garden of the Gods, the Olympic Training Center, Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument and other guest tours. Earn CEU's for attending.

Recent and past retreat of marine-terminating glaciers are broadly consistent with observed ocean warming, yet responses vary significantly within regions experiencing similar ocean conditions. We assess how fjord geometry modulates glacier response to a regional ocean warming on decadal to millennial time scales, by using an idealized, numerical model of fast-flowing glaciers including a crevasse-depth calving criterion. Our simulations show that, given identical climate forcing, grounding line responses can differ by tens of kilometers due to variations in channel width.

Journal of Hydrology: Regional Studies
Analysis of annual hydrographs from most rivers in the western U.S. suggests that snowmelt provides the majority of streamflow in these areas. In this study, we attempt to quantify what proportion of Utah's streamflow comes from cold season processes. Previous estimates have ranged from around 60-80 percent of total annual streamflow, with uncertainty stemming from complexities related to rain-on-snow events, the geographic and temporal distribution of precipitation events, and the partitioning of rainfall/snowmelt into streamflow.

Actions aimed to the evaluation of the sustainable potential of geothermal fluid reservoirs can provide fundamental information for minimizing the financial risk related to the exploitation activity of such natural resources. Geochemical prospections, coupled with geophysical measurements, are considered useful tools to investigate the chemical-physical features of hot, deep aquifers at relatively low cost, especially for developing countries poor in conventional energy sources, such as carbon, oil, and natural gases. The geothermal potential in the Guanacaste Geothermal Province (GGP), northern Costa Rica, has been investigated since the early 1970s.

Minerals
The release of valuable minerals from the associated gangues is called liberation. Good liberation is essential to the subsequent separation stage. Selective liberation is advantageous to improve the degree of liberation. Oolitic hematite is one of the typical refractory iron ores in China, and its resources are abundant. However, the conventional grinding processes are inefficient in improving the selective liberation of oolitic hematite. In this study, microwave processing and acid leaching were used to assist the liberation of oolitic hematite.

A comprehensive hydrochemical, stable isotope and microbial analyses characterisation has been performed to evaluate the sources of groundwater, nitrogen pollution and degradation processes occurring in an industrial polluted coastal aquifer in the framework of a complex hydrodynamic system. The coexistence of ammonium and nitrate has been observed in almost all the investigated monitoring wells, reaching maximum values of 100 and 200 mg/L for both species. Chloride and potassium concentration coupled with groundwater stable isotopes data show the influence of local and urban recharge and the occurrence of seawater intrusion in areas near the coastline.
