Institutional environments trap disabled geoscientists between a rock and a workplace
ScienceDaily
Inaccessible workplaces, normative departmental cultures and 'ableist' academic systems have all contributed to the continued underrepresentation and exclusion of disabled researchers in the Geosciences, according to an article published in Nature Geosciences.
The article argues that changes to both working spaces and attitudes are urgently needed if institutions are to attract, safeguard and retain people with disabilities.

Geologists to confirm whether stones found in KwaHlathi are indeed diamonds
SABC News
Retired geologist from Durban, Manqoba Msimango, says he can not rule out the authenticity of the recent discovery of what some believe to be diamonds in the KwaHlathi area outside Ladysmith in KwaZulu-Natal. Recently, people flocked to the area, some even from other provinces, to mine the stones.

Dinosaurs lived in greenhouse climate with hot summers, study shows
ScienceDaily
Researchers have developed an innovative way to use the clumped isotope method to reconstruct climate in the geological past on the seasonal scale. They show that dinosaurs had to deal with hotter summers than previously thought. The results suggest that in the mid latitudes, seasonal temperatures will likely rise along with climate warming, while seasonal difference is maintained. This results in very high summer temperatures.

Geologists find more evidence of active faults on Mt. Hood, big quake just 1,000 years ago
KATU-TV
Last September, two U.S. Geological Survey geologists and three graduate students from Portland State University trudged through the wilderness on the north side of Mount Hood.
Their mission: Dig a hole in the ground to determine how long ago a big earthquake occurred on the mountain.
At a point near the crest of the Cascades and at an elevation of 4,000 feet, they would literally uncover evidence of a large earthquake that shook the area just 1,000 years ago. In geologic terms, very recently.

A broad, distributed active fault zone lies beneath Salt Lake City, Utah
The Seismic Record
The active, 350 km long Wasatch fault zone (WFZ) defines the eastern boundary of the Basin and Range Province in northern Utah (Fig. 1). The urbanized part of the WFZ is composed of five tectonic segments with a complex earthquake record (summarized by DuRoss et al., 2016). Evidence for at least 24 large‐magnitude earthquakes since about 7 ka supports the possibility of a large magnitude (M∼7) surface‐rupturing earthquake along the Salt Lake City (SLC) segment. T
