Foundation of the AIPG
The Foundation of the American Institute of Professional Geologists will hold a Silent Auction for the benefit of the Foundation and its programs on Sunday, Sept. 9, at the Welcome Reception of the AIPG Annual Meeting at the Marriott Hotel, in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Please consider donating an item for the silent auction. Popular items last year included rock and mineral specimens, fossils, vacation home visit opportunities, old classic geology books and geologic maps, jewelry and other items that geologists enjoy and appreciate. So look around your office and your home. This is a great opportunity to pass along some items for others to enjoy, and to generate funds for the Foundation of the AIPG. Please complete the donation form to include with your donated items. We look forward to seeing you at the annual meeting.

Our field trips will explore central Colorado including the Cripple Creek and Victor gold mine, the Portland cement plant and adjacent Niobrara Formation quarry, the upper Arkansas geothermal systems, the latest in SW South Park geology, and the Wall Mountain Tuff, among others. The technical sessions will cover the full spectrum of geosciences; start thinking about your presentation. We're planning short courses on being an expert witness, the use of Rockware's software, and preparing an AIPG/AGI GOLI course. We'll have an Association of Women Geoscientists (AWG) Workshop and Student Career Workshop on Saturday, Sept. 8. Young professionals start working on a presentation on a project you're working on that will induce your employer to send you to the meeting; remember such presentations are also good marketing for your firm. We're arranging trips to the Garden of the Gods, the Olympic Training Center, Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument and other guest tours. Earn CEU's for attending.

The Science Education Resource Center
Join us for the fourth annual Earth Educators' Rendezvous. Last year's event brought together researchers and practitioners working in all aspects of undergraduate Earth education, including a mix of college faculty, graduate students, and K-12 teachers from all disciplines who are interested in improving their teaching about Earth. Our program is designed to appeal to everyone from the instructor attending their first Earth education-themed meeting, to experienced STEM education researchers, to administrators who want to better support students in their programs. Among many options, participants can learn about new teaching approaches, discover opportunities to get involved in research programs, prepare for an academic career, or discuss how to approach teaching and learning challenges in their classroom. Consider joining the Rendezvous for 2- or 3-day blocks, or for the whole week-long (5-day) event. For more information: https://serc.carleton.edu/earth_rendezvous/2018/overview.html.
AIPG will have a booth at this event.

Frontiers in Earth Science
This paper examines the behavior of volcanoes that erupt quickly with paroxysmal explosive eruptions, and other volcanoes that erupt over extended periods without such paroxysmal activity. "Fast" activity typically occurs over the course of months to years, including precursory unrest, the paroxysmal eruption itself, and post-paroxysmal activity. "Slow" activity comprises extended restlessness over the course of decades, and eruptions are typically small and sometimes uncommon.

Sensitivity analysis (SA) describes how varying inputs to a model subsequently varies its outputs. Its inclusion can support the systematic calibration of numerical models to back-calculate intensity properties of past torrent events that would otherwise be difficult or impossible to collect during their occurrence. Sensitivity analysis for model calibration is assessed with the back-calculation of a known torrent event.

We investigate the impacts of local temperature and precipitation trends on discharge and sediment loading by applying the model to a watershed in the northeastern U.S., where trends in increasing precipitation exceed those of other regions in North America. In this study we simulate the response of watershed sediment loading to changing frequencies and magnitudes of extreme precipitation events using a coupled model that explicitly simulates streambank erosion and failure within a distributed watershed model.

Nitrogen compounds such as nitrate, nitrite and ammonium are among the prolonged contaminants in surface water and groundwater worldwide. In this study, we evaluated nitrogen removal efficiency using the combination of biologically synthesized Pd-FeS and Bacillus cereus in comparison between two batch reactors, one with a single nitrate and the other with a mixed nitrogen under aerobic conditions.

The Llano Estacado is a vast elevated plain located at the southern end of the Great Plains of North America. The Llano Estacado region is favorably situated above the southernmost extension of the Ogallala Aquifer, which provides groundwater for a highly productive irrigated agricultural system. A method was developed to compute the average deviation of the groundwater level from a nonstationary annual-average water level.
