The American Institute of Professional Geologists (AIPG) and the European Federation of Geologists (EFG) have agreed to mutually recognize continuing education units (CEUs). This arrangement allows European Geologist (EurGeol) title holders and AIPG Certified Professional Geologists (CPGs) to seek CEUs from either organization, significantly expanding the course offerings to both groups.
Through this agreement, EurGeols may now benefit from additional pathways to the completion of their annual requirements, most notably the Geoscience Online Learning Initiative (GOLI), a collaboration between AIPG and the American Geosciences Institute (AGI). Through GOLI, AGI provides a platform for a growing library of webinars and on-demand courses, all of which are eligible for CEUs awarded by AIPG.
The AIPG-EFG agreement also works in reverse: CPGs can fulfil their CEU requirements by enrolling in EurGeol courses, and CPGs that are based in Europe can now more easily complete the renewal requirements while remaining abroad.
AGI's Director of Communications and Technology, Dr. Christopher M. Keane, applauded the new agreement: "We are excited that AIPG and EFG have partnered to provide continuing education opportunities to an increasing number of professional geoscientists around the world. GOLI will be a critical part of this agreement, and this signifies that online learning is an exciting frontier for the geoscience community."

American Geosciences Institute
The American Geosciences Institute (AGI) has released a new publication, Petroleum and the Environment, to provide an accessible and information-rich overview of the many intersections between oil and gas operations and the environment.
This publication provides a completely rewritten and expanded update to the original Petroleum and the Environment, published in 2003 as part of AGI's Environmental Awareness Series. Much has changed since then, with advances in hydraulic fracturing ("fracking") and horizontal drilling leading to a huge increase in oil and gas production in many parts of the United States. This growth came with new environmental challenges, opportunities, and uncertainties. But with variably rapid changes in technology, scientific understanding, regulation, and industry practices, sources of reliable information on these developments have been hard to come by.
Taking the form of 24 standalone but complementary factsheets and case studies, Petroleum and the Environment provides a coherent, impartial look at the range of environmental questions relating to oil and gas operations in 2018. Particular emphasis is placed on the current scientific understanding of each topic, as well as technological developments, regulations, sources of uncertainty, effective mitigation strategies, and areas of particular concern or progress. Just as importantly, Petroleum and the Environment contains a rich bibliography of primary data sources, high-quality analyses, regulatory information, and much more, allowing interested readers to pursue any topic to their own satisfaction.
Petroleum and the Environment draws from geoscience, engineering, public health, economics, law, and many other disciplines to highlight a common theme: informed decision-making requires access to reliable information from a wide range of sources. By bringing these sources together in one place, Petroleum and the Environment provides this information, and the means to acquire more, to the general public, educators, and policy makers.
This publication is a product of AGI's Critical Issues Program, and was supported by the American Association of Petroleum Geologists Foundation and AGI's Center for Geoscience & Society.

In some geological formations, borehole resistivity measurements can be simulated using a sequence of 1-D models. By considering a 1-D layered media, we can reduce the dimensionality of the problem from 3-D to 1.5-D via a Hankel transform. The resulting formulation is often solved via a semi-analytic method, mainly due to its high performance. However, semi-analytic methods have important limitations such as, for example, their inability to model piecewise linear variations on the resistivity.

The 2017 Mw 7.3 Iran–Iraq earthquake occurred in a region where the pattern of major plate convergence is well constrained, but limited information is available on the seismogenic structures. Geological observations, interpretation of seismic reflection profiles, and well data are used in this paper to build a regional, balanced cross section that provides a comprehensive picture of the geometry and dimensional parameters of active faults in the hypocentral area.

Silica polymorphs, such as quartz, tridymite, cristobalite, coesite, stishovite, seifertite, baddeleyite-type SiO2, high-pressure silica glass, moganite and opal, have been found in lunar and/or martian rocks by macro-microanalyses of the samples and remote-sensing observations on the celestial bodies. Because each silica polymorph is stable or metastable at different pressure and temperature conditions, its appearance is variable depending on the occurrence of the lunar and Martian rocks.

Estimates of lava volumes provide important data on the lava flooding history and evolution of a volcano. For mapping volcanic deposits, including lava flows, the advancement of satellite remote sensing techniques offers a great potential. Here we characterize the eruptive events occurred at Mt Etna between January 2011 and December 2015 leading to the emplacement of numerous lava flows and to the formation of a new pyroclastic cone (NSEC) on the eastern flank of the South East Crater.

In 2017, more than 330 million people visited national parks alone, with millions more visiting state parks, wildlife refuges and federally designated wilderness areas as well.
USGS scientists are working with many partners to study how these visitors are affecting protected natural areas. Some of the impacts include trampling of native vegetation, causing erosion of soils, contaminating water, attracting wildlife with food and displacing wildlife from preferred habitats.
