The American Institute of Professional Geologists (AIPG) and the European Federation of Geologists (EFG) have agreed to mutually recognize continuing education units (CEUs). This arrangement allows European Geologist (EurGeol) title holders and AIPG Certified Professional Geologists (CPGs) to seek CEUs from either organization, significantly expanding the course offerings to both groups.

American Geosciences Institute
The American Geosciences Institute (AGI) has released a new publication, Petroleum and the Environment, to provide an accessible and information-rich overview of the many intersections between oil and gas operations and the environment. This publication provides a completely rewritten and expanded update to the original Petroleum and the Environment, published in 2003 as part of AGI's Environmental Awareness Series. Much has changed since then, with advances in hydraulic fracturing ("fracking") and horizontal drilling leading to a huge increase in oil and gas production in many parts of the United States. This growth came with new environmental challenges, opportunities, and uncertainties. But with variably rapid changes in technology, scientific understanding, regulation, and industry practices, sources of reliable information on these developments have been hard to come by.

Our field trips will explore central Colorado including the Cripple Creek and Victor gold mine, the Portland cement plant and adjacent Niobrara Formation quarry, the upper Arkansas geothermal systems, the latest in SW South Park geology, and the Wall Mountain Tuff, among others. The technical sessions will cover the full spectrum of geosciences; start thinking about your presentation. We're planning short courses on being an expert witness, the use of Rockware's software, and preparing an AIPG/AGI GOLI course. We'll have an Association of Women Geoscientists (AWG) Workshop and Student Career Workshop on Saturday, Sept. 8. Young professionals start working on a presentation on a project you're working on that will induce your employer to send you to the meeting; remember such presentations are also good marketing for your firm. We're arranging trips to the Garden of the Gods, the Olympic Training Center, Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument and other guest tours. Earn CEU's for attending.

Join us for the fourth annual Earth Educators' Rendezvous. Last year's event brought together researchers and practitioners working in all aspects of undergraduate Earth education, including a mix of college faculty, graduate students, and K-12 teachers from all disciplines who are interested in improving their teaching about Earth. Our program is designed to appeal to everyone from the instructor attending their first Earth education-themed meeting, to experienced STEM education researchers, to administrators who want to better support students in their programs. Among many options, participants can learn about new teaching approaches, discover opportunities to get involved in research programs, prepare for an academic career, or discuss how to approach teaching and learning challenges in their classroom. Consider joining the Rendezvous for 2- or 3-day blocks, or for the whole week-long (5-day) event. For more information: https://serc.carleton.edu/earth_rendezvous/2018/overview.html.
AIPG will have a booth at this event.

Seismic rate increases often precede eruptions at volcanoes worldwide. However, many eruptions occur without such precursors, limiting their usefulness for forecasting in some cases. Additionally, identifying seismic rate increases near volcanoes with high levels of background seismicity is non-trivial and many periods of elevated seismicity occur without ensuing eruptions.

Guatemala's Volcán de Fuego erupted in early June, killing at least 110 people, while hundreds more remain missing. Streams of lava and plumes of smoke and ash have displaced thousands of Guatemalans, and destroyed an estimated 21,000 acres of crops.
In coming weeks and months, the weather will play a critical role in helping or hindering Guatemala's recovery from the blast. Ángel G. Muñoz, a climate scientist at Columbia's International Research Institute for Climate and Society (IRI), is working with the Guatemalan government to help them plan ahead.

Growing social awareness of the need to adequately treat mining waste in order to protect the environment has led to an increase in the research in this field. The aim of this study was to analyze the dynamics of the research focused on mining waste and its sustainable management on a worldwide scale from 1988 to 2017. A systematic review and a bibliometric analysis of 3577 articles were completed.

The application of deep learning, specifically deep convolutional neural networks (DCNNs), to the classification of remotely-sensed imagery of natural landscapes has the potential to greatly assist in the analysis and interpretation of geomorphic processes. However, the general usefulness of deep learning applied to conventional photographic imagery at a landscape scale is, at yet, largely unproven.

Back in 1905, the Colorado River, swollen with heavy rainfall and snowmelt, surged into a dry lake bed along California's San Andreas Fault and formed the Salton Sea. The flood waters submerged most of the small town of Salton, along with nearby tribal lands. The inundation also covered a key, seismically active stretch of the San Andreas Fault's southern tip in silt, hiding evidence of its potential volatility. A Utah State University geologist began hypothesizing the location and geometry of the sediment-obscured fault zone more than a decade ago.

Trace element (TE) partitioning in the system "mineral-hydrothermal solution" is studied by the method of thermo-gradient crystal growth coupled with internal sampling of a fluid phase. The analytical procedure used enables evaluating of structurally bound and superficially bound modes of TE in crystals and determining corresponding dual partition coefficients. The case of precious metals (PM — Au, Pt, Pd) at 450 and 500 degrees Celcius and 100 MPa pressure is considered.
