CEUs available — AGI/AIPG Geoscience Online Learning Initiative (GOLI)
AIPG and American Geosciences Institute
GOLI on-demand online courses provide learners with the flexibility to self-pace their progress, since on-demand courses do not have a set schedule like traditional academic semester-based courses. Brought to you via the OpenedX Learning Management System (LMS), learners are able to browse course descriptions, enroll in specific courses, access content, and complete any course completely free of charge. All learners who complete online courses offered through the GOLI platform with a passing grade of 70% or higher are eligible to purchase Continuing Education Units (CEUs) for a nominal charge.

Sample courses:
  • An Introduction to Professional Writing for Geoscience Careers
  • Tracking Global Supply Critical Materials
  • Basics of Seismic Petroleum Exploration for New Hires
  • Best Practices in Mineral Resource Estimation & Reporting
  • Fundamentals of Professional Ethics: Elements and Examples
  • Professional Geologist Licensure Requirements and the ASBOG National Geology License Examinations
  • Understanding Professional Geologist License Requirements: California 2019

AGI results from the Geoscience COVID-19 study
AIPG
This data brief provides insights from the most recent results from the Geoscience COVID-19 study regarding impacts to research activities during Spring 2020 from the COVID-19 pandemic. The most common impacts to research and project activities included deferring research activities to a later time and changing the mode of the research activities to utilize virtual or computational activities, or to literature review and writing activities. Cancellation of planned research and projects was more common among post-doctoral fellows and students than among other cohorts.

Geologists find evidence of two new supervolcano eruptions at Yellowstone
Massive Science
Super-eruptions can decimate entire regions, and their cocktail of ash and gases can alter the climate. But, even though they eject huge amounts of material, there are very few documented super-eruptions in the geologic record. So we don’t fully understand why they are so big or how often they occur. Now, details of the Yellowstone supervolcanic eruption — some 8.7 million years ago — are documented in a new study published in the journal Geology.

Earth's magnetic field can change 10 times faster than previously thought
University of Leeds via ScienceDaily
A new study by the University of Leeds and University of California at San Diego reveals that changes in the direction of the Earth's magnetic field may take place 10 times faster than previously thought. Their study gives new insight into the swirling flow of iron 2,800 kilometers below the planet's surface and how it has influenced the movement of the magnetic field during the past hundred thousand years.

Conceptual framework of energy dissipation during disintegration in rock avalanches
Frontiers in Earth Science
Rock avalanches usually progress through three consecutive phases: Detachment (Phase 1), Disintegration (Phase 2), and Flow (Phase 3). While significant advances have been achieved in modeling Rock Avalanche Phase 1 (Detachment) and Phase 3 (Flow), the crucial link between both during Phase 2 (Disintegration) is still poorly understood.

The Zagreb (Croatia) M5.5 earthquake on March 22
Geosciences
On March 22, Zagreb was struck by an M5.5 earthquake that had been expected for more than 100 years and revealed all the failures in the construction of residential buildings in the Croatian capital, especially those built in the first half of the 20th century. Because of that, extensive seismological, geological, geodetic and structural engineering surveys were conducted immediately after the main shock. This study provides descriptions of damage, specifying the building performances and their correlation with the local soil characteristics, i.e., seismic motion amplification.

99-million-year-old insects caught in amber shows brilliant colors
The Science Times
Knowing the colors of prehistoric creatures is a challenging task, especially when what's left of them, such as bones, cannot convey what color they were when they were still living. But scientists have recently been working out pigments from fossilized feathers or in the case of the most recent study, used Burmese amber to see the world of ancient colors.
