Our field trips will explore central Colorado including the Cripple Creek and Victor gold mine, the Portland cement plant and adjacent Niobrara Formation quarry, the upper Arkansas geothermal systems, the latest in SW South Park geology, and the Wall Mountain Tuff, among others. The technical sessions will cover the full spectrum of geosciences; start thinking about your presentation. We're planning short courses on being an expert witness, the use of Rockware's software, and preparing an AIPG/AGI GOLI course. We'll have an Association of Women Geoscientists (AWG) Workshop and Student Career Workshop on Saturday, Sept. 8. Young professionals start working on a presentation on a project you're working on that will induce your employer to send you to the meeting; remember such presentations are also good marketing for your firm. We're arranging trips to the Garden of the Gods, the Olympic Training Center, Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument and other guest tours. Earn CEU's for attending.

The International Association for Geoscience Diversity (IAGD) has joined the American Geosciences Institute (AGI) as an International Associate. The IAGD's admission to the AGI Federation was formally approved by the AGI Executive Committee earlier this year. Initially what began as a grassroots advisory group to support geoscience instructors working to accommodate the needs of students with disabilities in introductory geoscience courses, the IAGD has grown to an international organization leading the effort to promote access and inclusion from academia into the geoscience profession. Today, the goal of the IAGD remains the same: to mitigate barriers that have traditionally excluded students and geoscience professionals due to a temporary or permanent disability.

Between 2014 and 2017, 2,376 geoscience graduates took AGI's Geoscience Student Exit Survey — 1,764 bachelor's graduates, 378 master's graduates, and 234 doctoral graduates. In September 2017, AGI's Workforce Program followed up with these Exit Survey participants to ask them about their career path as early-career geoscientists. This survey collected 332 responses out of the approximately 1,250 individuals that indicated their willingness to respond to future surveys about their career path (27 percent response rate) — 163 bachelor's graduates, 101 master's graduates, and 68 doctoral graduates.

In 1916 the time stamp for quantitative palynology was set with Lennart von Post's initial paper on pollen analysis and environmental change in the Scandinavian peat bogs. His subsequent work and reviews provided us with a map of the known palynological world into the 1930s. This map had, and to this day still has, many substantial holes of knowledge. In particular, environmental reconstruction in arid lands remain much less known, largely due to the paucity of depositional environments in these areas as well as challenges with preservation in regions either uniformly dry or subjected to strong wet/dry cycles.

Hydrothermal alteration is proximal to many base and precious metal deposits, and its products can provide insights into the characteristics of hydrothermal systems. To be useful to exploration geologists and researchers, however, alteration needs to be typified and quantified. Alteration type informs on mineralizing style (e.g., have we found a porphyry or a volcanogenic massive sulphide deposit?), while quantification of its intensity helps position a sample within the system (e.g., how close are we to the main economic deposit?).
