Join us for the 2022 National Conference in Marquette on the beautiful shores of the world's largest freshwater lake!
This year's meeting theme is "Geology: The Cornerstone of our Future." Geology plays a significant role in today's society and will become even more important in the years to come. Our reliance on basic resources and building materials such as sand and gravel for roads, limestone for concrete, iron for structural purposes, and other base metals for electronics and other applications will not diminish. In addition, the need for rare earth elements as well as reliable sources of fresh water are in high demand. We will explore these topics and more in what will be the perfect time to visit Michigan's Upper Peninsula.
Start making your plans and bring your family! Northern Michigan offers fantastic opportunities for exploration and time away from the daily routine.
Earn CEUs for attending the Executive Committee Meetings, Technical Sessions and Technical Field Trips!

AIPG Mentoring Program
AIPG
AIPG believes mentoring is integral to encouraging geoscientists throughout their careers. This can include discussions on many different topics, including but not limited to:
- specific geoscience topics or questions
- education and experience required for specific career tracks
- any geoscience topic of interest
- geoscience employment search
- selecting the best-suited geoscience career track
- work abroad experiences in geosciences
AIPG is setting up this mentor site to encourage one-on-one AIPG-member discussions. We encourage the mentor and mentee to include others in their discussions and research as needed. A mentor may or may not have applicable experience or knowledge related to a mentee's area of interest, but the mentor will help find information and/or an alternate mentor.
AIPG Members interested in becoming a Mentor can submit the online Mentor form.

New model shows Earth's deep mantle was drier from the start
Phys.org
Earth's mantle is the thick layer of silicate rock between Earth's crust and its molten core, making up about 84% of our planet's volume. The mantle is predominantly solid but, on geologic time scales, it behaves as a viscous fluid — as difficult to stir and mix as a pot of caramel.
But, sticking with candy comparisons, maybe think more about malt balls and not gooey caramels.

Stronger overturning circulation in the Pacific during the last glacial period
EurekAlert!
Located between Australia and New Zealand, the Tasman Sea is an important but so far neglected component of the global ocean conveyor belt. Now a new study has discovered evidence that this marginal sea in the South Pacific also played an important role in the exchange of water masses between the large ocean basins during the last ice age.

Exploring the deep sea as a new source of rare earth elements
Phys.org
Rare earth elements (REEs), like lanthanum and cerium, are vital components in many everyday and emerging technologies, including smartphones, hard disks and clean energy. However, as concerns about the environmental impact of REE extraction and supply chain vulnerabilities grow (China dominates the REE market, accounting for 57.5% of production in 2020), researchers are looking to new sources of REEs.

Plankton will store more carbon as Earth's climate warms, but storage beyond the end of the century is uncertain
ScienceDaily
The amount of carbon stored by microscopic plankton will increase in the coming century, predict researchers at the University of Bristol and the National Oceanography Centre (NOC).
Using the latest IPCC models (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change), the team expects the 'Biological Pump' — a process where microscopic plants, often called phytoplankton, take up carbon and then die and sink into the deep ocean where carbon is stored for hundreds of years — to account for five to 17% of the total increase in carbon uptake by the oceans by 2100.
