CEUs available — AGI/AIPG Geoscience Online Learning Initiative (GOLI)
AIPG and American Geosciences Institute
GOLI on-demand online courses provide learners with the flexibility to self-pace their progress, since on-demand courses do not have a set schedule like traditional academic semester-based courses. Brought to you via the OpenedX Learning Management System (LMS), learners are able to browse course descriptions, enroll in specific courses, access content, and complete any course completely free of charge. All learners who complete online courses offered through the GOLI platform with a passing grade of 70% or higher are eligible to purchase Continuing Education Units (CEUs) for a nominal charge.

Sample courses:
  • An Introduction to Professional Writing for Geoscience Careers
  • Tracking Global Supply Critical Materials
  • Basics of Seismic Petroleum Exploration for New Hires
  • Best Practices in Mineral Resource Estimation & Reporting
  • Fundamentals of Professional Ethics: Elements and Examples
  • Professional Geologist Licensure Requirements and the ASBOG National Geology License Examinations

AGI results from the Geoscience COVID-19 study
AIPG
This data brief provides insights from the most recent results from the Geoscience COVID-19 study regarding impacts to research activities during Spring 2020 from the COVID-19 pandemic. The most common impacts to research and project activities included deferring research activities to a later time and changing the mode of the research activities to utilize virtual or computational activities, or to literature review and writing activities. Cancellation of planned research and projects was more common among post-doctoral fellows and students than among other cohorts.

Biosignatures may reveal a wealth of new data locked inside old fossils
Yale News
Step aside, skeletons — a new world of biochemical “signatures” found in all kinds of ancient fossils is revealing itself to paleontologists, providing a new avenue for insights into major evolutionary questions. In a new study published in the journal Science Advances, Yale researchers outline a novel approach to finding biological signals long thought to be lost in the process of fossilization.

Study could rewrite Earth's history
Curtin University via ScienceDaily
New research has found evidence to suggest that the Earth's first continents were not formed by subduction in a modern-like plate tectonics environment as previously thought, and instead may have been created by an entirely different process. Published in the journal Geology, the research team measured the iron and zinc isotopes in rock sourced from central Siberia and South Africa and determined that the composition of these rocks may have formed in a non-subduction environment.

A novel type of neural networks for feature engineering of geological data: Case studies of coal and gas hydrate-bearing sediments
Geoscience Frontiers
The nature of the measured data varies among different disciplines of geosciences. In rock engineering, features of data play a leading role in determining the feasible methods of its proper manipulation. The present study focuses on resolving one of the major deficiencies of conventional neural networks (NNs) in dealing with rock engineering data.

New evidence of long-term volcanic, seismic risks in northern Europe
University of California – Los Angeles via ScienceDaily
An ancient European volcanic region may pose both a greater long-term volcanic risk and seismic risk to northwestern Europe than scientists had realized, geophysicists report. The densely populated area is centered in the Eifel region of Germany, and covers parts of Belgium, the Netherlands, France and Luxembourg. The scientists are not predicting that a volcanic eruption or earthquake is imminent in the densely populated area. But the study revealed activity that is uncommon for the region.
