Recent results from the Geoscience COVID-19 study
AIPG
This data brief provides insights from the most recent results from the Geoscience COVID-19 study regarding impacts to geoscience employers from the COVID-19 pandemic. Half of geoscience employers are expecting lower financial performance for this year compared to 2019 as a result of the pandemic. In February, nearly 40% of businesses reported an outlook of increased financial performance over last year, but by June, these expectations had lowered substantially.

CEUs available — AGI/AIPG Geoscience Online Learning Initiative (GOLI)
AIPG and American Geosciences Institute
GOLI on-demand online courses provide learners with the flexibility to self-pace their progress, since on-demand courses do not have a set schedule like traditional academic semester-based courses. Brought to you via the OpenedX Learning Management System (LMS), learners are able to browse course descriptions, enroll in specific courses, access content, and complete any course completely free of charge. All learners who complete online courses offered through the GOLI platform with a passing grade of 70% or higher are eligible to purchase Continuing Education Units (CEUs) for a nominal charge.

Sample courses:
  • An Introduction to Professional Writing for Geoscience Careers
  • Tracking Global Supply Critical Materials
  • Basics of Seismic Petroleum Exploration for New Hires
  • Best Practices in Mineral Resource Estimation & Reporting
  • Fundamentals of Professional Ethics: Elements and Examples
  • Professional Geologist Licensure Requirements and the ASBOG National Geology License Examinations

Uplifting of Columbia River basalts opens window on how region was sculpted
University of Oregon via ScienceDaily
Uplifting of Columbia River basalts has allowed University of Oregon researchers to better understand of how magma 14-16 million years ago shaped the region and why greenhouse gases released during a series of volcanic eruptions did not trigger a global extinction event. The insights, published in Scientific Reports, were drawn from analyses of oxygen and hydrogen isotopes in crustal material, a mix of magma and original rocks, that is now exposed by geological uplifting and erosion.

Powerful eruptions on the sun might trigger earthquakes
Discover Magazine
Through decades of research, scientists have learned that large, powerful earthquakes commonly occur in groups, not in random patterns. But exactly why has so far remained a mystery. Now, new research published July 13 in Scientific Reviews, asserts the first strong — though still disputed — evidence that powerful eruptions on the sun can trigger mass earthquake events on Earth.

Monitoring groundwater changes more precisely
Phys.org
A new method could help to track groundwater changes better than before. To this end, researchers from Potsdam and Oberlin, Ohio (USA), have compared gravity field data from the GRACE and GRACE-Follow On satellite missions with other measuring methods. They investigated the seasonal water storage in almost 250 river basins in Asia, whose water regime is dominated by monsoon. The results allow the large-scale GRACE data to be scaled down to smaller regions.

Prospecting and evaluation of underground massive ice by ground-penetrating radar
Geosciences
Data from geocryological studies of soil and rock massifs in permafrost zone are very important as a basis for predicting possible negative consequences associated with climate change. A promising technique for studying geocryological structures (various types of underground ice) is the ground-penetrating radar (GPR) method. This paper presents the applications of the GPR method to prospect and evaluate massive ice in a frozen rock mass.

Growth rate of common trilobites
American Museum of Natural History via ScienceDaily
If you've ever held a trilobite fossil, seen one in a classroom, or walked by one in a store, chances are it was Elrathia kingii, one of the most common and well-recognized trilobites. New work describes the development and growth rate of Elrathia kingii — only the second such dataset to be compiled for a trilobite — allowing for the first comparison among trilobite species.
