Our field trips will explore central Colorado including the Cripple Creek and Victor gold mine, the Portland cement plant and adjacent Niobrara Formation quarry, the upper Arkansas geothermal systems, the latest in SW South Park geology, and the Wall Mountain Tuff, among others. The technical sessions will cover the full spectrum of geosciences; start thinking about your presentation. We're planning short courses on being an expert witness, the use of Rockware's software, and preparing an AIPG/AGI GOLI course. We'll have an Association of Women Geoscientists (AWG) Workshop and Student Career Workshop on Saturday, Sept. 8. Young professionals start working on a presentation on a project you're working on that will induce your employer to send you to the meeting; remember such presentations are also good marketing for your firm. We're arranging trips to the Garden of the Gods, the Olympic Training Center, Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument and other guest tours. Earn CEU's for attending.

AIPG and AGI partnered to build a platform called the Geoscience Online Learning Initiative that hosts online courses covering a variety of geoscience topics. Courses are developed as one of two formats: either live webinar events or on-demand courses. Many of our live webinar events get converted into on-demand courses. Heather Houlton, AGI's Workforce Development Specialist will demonstrate how to become involved with GOLI. She will provide guidance to our attendees about process and mechanics of presenting a live webinar and then converting it to an online program. She will also review the process by which AIPG members can contribute to GOLI without being a speaker on a live webinar event.

The American Geosciences Institute (AGI) has asked us to disseminate a short, two-minute survey about where the community finds reliable sources of geoscientific information and how these assets are accessed. This study will help improve the communities' access to reliable information services. Please share your experiences by participating in AGI's four-question survey. The survey deadline is Friday, Aug. 3. We appreciate your willingness to participate.

TPG is AIPG's quarterly journal and is in need of technical articles (which will be peer-reviewed), articles about aspects of professional geological practice, section and other news of interest, anecdotes of fun or fear in the field, and commentary to stimulate discussion. You are invited to take the opportunity to publically express your point of view or explain work products related to the science, practice and regulation of the profession of geology.

Frontiers in Earch Science
Seismic rate increases often precede eruptions at volcanoes worldwide. However, many eruptions occur without such precursors. Additionally, identifying seismic rate increases near volcanoes with high levels of background seismicity is non-trivial and many periods of elevated seismicity occur without ensuing eruptions, limiting their usefulness for forecasting in some cases. In this study, we consistently apply a common statistical tool, the β-statistic, to seismically monitored eruptions in Alaska of various styles to determine the overall prevalence of seismic rate anomalies immediately preceding eruptions.

The new mineral sharyginite, Ca3TiFe2O8, a member of the anion deficient perovskite group, was discovered in metacarbonate xenoliths in alkali basalt from the Caspar quarry, Bellerberg volcano, Eifel, Germany. In the holotype specimen, sharyginite is widespread in the contact zone of xenolith with alkali basalt.

Engineering properties of bedrock materials at Badlands National Park were used to develop models for Park managers to assess slope erosion and stability for fossil resource protection. Six fully instrumented sites were used to document slope conditions. Bedrock consisted of Oligocene White River Group rocks. Bulk erosion rates correlated to grain size with silty-sandy materials producing higher mass erosion rates as a function of the silt-to-clay ratio and plastic index. Data indicated that as grain size decreased, plastic index increased leading to a decrease in erodibility.

Geosciences
The majority of limestone islands are made of eogenetic carbonate rock, with intrinsic high porosity and permeability. The freshwater lenses of small islands are dominated by diffuse flow regimes as the island perimeter is everywhere close to the meteoric catchment of the island interior. This flow regime produces flank margin caves at the lens margin, where dissolution is enhanced by mixing corrosion, superposition of organic decay horizons and higher flow velocities as the lens thins.
