CEUs available — AGI/AIPG Geoscience Online Learning Initiative (GOLI)
AIPG and American Geosciences Institute
GOLI on-demand online courses provide learners with the flexibility to self-pace their progress, since on-demand courses do not have a set schedule like traditional academic semester-based courses. Brought to you via the OpenedX Learning Management System (LMS), learners are able to browse course descriptions, enroll in specific courses, access content, and complete any course completely free of charge. All learners who complete online courses offered through the GOLI platform with a passing grade of 70% or higher are eligible to purchase Continuing Education Units (CEUs) for a nominal charge.

Sample courses:
  • An Introduction to Professional Writing for Geoscience Careers
  • Tracking Global Supply Critical Materials
  • Basics of Seismic Petroleum Exploration for New Hires
  • Best Practices in Mineral Resource Estimation & Reporting
  • Fundamentals of Professional Ethics: Elements and Examples
  • Professional Geologist Licensure Requirements and the ASBOG National Geology License Examinations

Scientists identify 37 active volcanoes on Venus — 'Planet's interior is still churning'
SciTechDaily
A new study identified 37 recently active volcanic structures on Venus. The study provides some of the best evidence yet that Venus is still a geologically active planet. A research paper on the work, which was conducted by researchers at the University of Maryland and the Institute of Geophysics at ETH Zurich, Switzerland, was published in the journal Nature Geoscience on July 20.

Schlieren-bound magmatic structures record crystal flow-sorting in dynamic upper-crustal magma-mush chambers
Frontiers in Earth Science
The size, longevity and mobility of upper-crustal magma mushes, and thus their ability to mix and interact with newly arriving magma batches, are key factors determining the evolution of magma reservoirs. Magmatic structures in plutons represent local sites of structural and compositional diversity and provide an opportunity to test the extent of physical and chemical processes that operated through time.

Moderate aftershock of magnitude 7.8 quake recorded off Alaska Peninsula
The Associated Press via Anchorage Daily News
A moderate earthquake, an aftershock of last week’s magnitude 7.8 quake off the Alaska Peninsula, occurred in the same region Monday, according to the Alaska Earthquake Center. The center said the July 27 quake at 11:34 a.m. had a preliminary magnitude of 5.5 and was located at a depth of about 18 miles. A magnitude 7.8 earthquake July 21 was centered in waters 65 miles south-southeast of the tiny community of Perryville, at a depth of 17 miles, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. It generated tsunami warnings that were canceled after the earthquake created a wave of a less than a foot.

Model links patterns in sediment to rain, uplift and sea level change
University of Texas at Austin via Phys.org
Forces that shape the Earth's surface are recorded in a number of natural records, from tree rings to cave formations. In a recent study, researchers from The University of Texas at Austin show that another natural record — sediments packed together at basin margins — offers scientists a powerful tool for understanding the forces that shaped our planet over millions of years, with implications on present day understanding

Study: India's eastern most part generating moderate quakes at two different depths
Deccan Herald
A study done exploring the elastic properties of rocks and seismicity in the eastern most part of the country has found that the area is generating moderate earthquakes at two different depths. Low magnitude earthquakes are concentrated at 1-15 km depth, and slightly higher than 4.0 magnitude earthquakes are mostly generated from 25-35 km depth.

From rocks to icebergs, the natural world tends to break into cubes
Science
Perhaps the Cubists were right. Researchers have found that when everything from icebergs to rocks breaks apart, their pieces tend to resemble cubes. The finding suggests a universal rule of fragmentation at scales ranging from the microscopic to the planetary.
