On May 12, AIPG Executive Director Aaron Johnson, spoke at the 2019 TEDx Conference in Colorado Springs, Colorado. His talk combines his professional and life experiences to illustrate the impacts we have on Earth and on each other. Please watch and share on your social media platforms (facebook, twitter, Instagram) and email to your friends and colleagues. This talk is for everyone; you need not be a geologist to relate to Aaron's message.
If this talk gets enough views, TED will move the talk to the main TED website, placing AIPG on the big stage. Please help us reach that goal by sharing Aaron's talk as widely as possible.

In our latest data brief, we examine the changes in median salaries among geoscience-related occupations between 2017 and 2018 and compare those changes to salaries for other science and engineering occupations. As a whole, geoscience-related median salaries increased 2% between 2017 and 2018, on par with other major science and engineering occupational categories. Some occupations, such as petroleum engineers, geographers, geoscience-related post-secondary teachers, and natural science managers saw increases of 4% over the same time period.

Dr. Rasoul Sorkhabi of the University of Utah in Salt Lake City and a member of the AIPG is conducting a survey on "Geoscience: The Most Important Problems" for an article. He requests each geoscientist to suggest 1-5 most important problems that remain to be resolved in our field. These need to be general scientific problems not very specific regional geology. Your answer need not be very detailed; just a simple line for each question will suffice.
Please send your reply to rsorkhabi@egi.utah.edu.
The names of respondents will remain confidential. The reults (the article) will be wend to all respondents.

The processes that accompany the death of an oceanic plate, as a ridge nears a trench, remain enigmatic. How the plate might reorganize, fragment, and eventually be captured by one of the bounding plates are among the unresolved details. We present a tomographic model of the Pacific Northwest from onshore and offshore seismic data that reveals a hole in the subducted Juan de Fuca plate.

Three billion years ago, on Mars, the shores of an ocean may have been flooded by a mega-tsunami. Now the crater left by the bolide impact that probably triggered the tsunami has been identified. This article argues that the site of the impact is what is now the Lomonosov crater.

There are small pieces of evidence, suggesting that South America's hydrological cycle is changing, which impacts its water availability and, consequently, the Earth's surface due to its elastic response to the surface mass loading/unloading. Therefore, we analyzed three to 15 years of vertical crustal displacements (VCDs) due to mass loadings using 292 Global Positioning System (GPS) stations in South America, which are essential for studies related to tectonic phenomena, for example.

The Maryborough meteorite is a new H5 ordinary chondrite discovered about 2 km south of Maryborough, Victoria, in May 2015. It is a single stone measuring approximately 39 x 14 x 14 cm and with a mass of 17 kg. Plentiful indistinct chondrules are up to 1 mm across in a strongly recrystallised plagioclase-bearing matrix.

When the rocky mound lurched onto his computer screen aboard the R/V OGS Explora, geophysicist Emanuele Lodolo couldn't believe his eyes. Just four miles off the coast of Sicily, the team had stumbled on a previously unknown volcano with an old lava flow trailing some 2.5 miles westward across the seafloor. The edifice, named Actea, is one of six volcanoes recently discovered while scientists were mapping the underwater landscape of the Sicilian Channel, a heavily trafficked waterway off the southwest coast of the island.

In this study we investigated fluid displacement water with supercritical (sc) CO22 in chalk under conditions close to those used for geologic CO2sequestration (GCS), to answer two main questions: How much volume is available for scCO2injection? And what is the main mechanism of displacement over a range of temperatures? Characterization of immiscible scCO2 displacement, at the pore scale in the complex microstructure in chalk reservoirs, offers a pathway to better understand the macroscopic processes at the continuum scale.

The Magallanes-Tierra del Fuego region, Southern Patagonia (53-56°S) features a plethora of fjords and remote and isolated islands, and hosts several thousand glaciers. The number of investigated glaciers with respect to the multiple Neoglacial advances is based on a few individual studies and is still fragmentary, which complicates the interpretation of the glacial dynamics in the southernmost part of America. Schiaparelli Glacier (54°24'S, 70°50'W), located at the western side of the Cordillera Darwin, was selected for tree-ring-based and radiocarbon dating of the glacial deposits.

Icy planets once thought too cold to support life might have livable land areas above freezing, challenging the typical assumption of what kinds of planets might be habitable, a new study suggests.
Scientists have long thought snowball planets were hostile to life because of the extreme cold. But new research in AGU's Journal of Geophysical Research: Planets finds some snowball planets might have areas of land near their equators that reach livable temperatures.

Today, despite its parched exterior, there is still water under the Negev desert in Israel. Understanding where it came from, how much is there and what's happening to it is critical to the security and allocation of that crucial resource. Researchers are collaborating to better understand the Nubian Sandstone Aquifer System, which lies beneath a large portion of the Negev and other parts of Israel. An article describing the research was published July 29, in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) online.
