COVID-19 impacts to small businesses in the professional, scientific, and technical services sector
American Geosciences Institute
To capture COVID-19 impacts to small businesses, the U.S. Census Bureau deployed the weekly Small Business Pulse Survey from April 26, 2020 to June 27, 2020. The survey specifically targeted non-farm, single-location businesses with receipts greater than or equal to $1,000 and with less than 500 employees. The survey provides industry sector data about business operations, revenue, financial assistance, supply chain disruptions, and employee staffing. Although the data is aggregated at broad industry sector and sub-sector levels, it is useful to examine trends in COVID-19 impacts to small businesses within the professional, scientific, and technical services sector, a key sector in which geoscientists work. The survey’s data also provides a backdrop against which to compare the finer-resolution data from the AGI Geoscience COVID-19 study.

CEUs available — AGI/AIPG Geoscience Online Learning Initiative (GOLI)
AIPG and American Geosciences Institute
GOLI on-demand online courses provide learners with the flexibility to self-pace their progress, since on-demand courses do not have a set schedule like traditional academic semester-based courses. Brought to you via the OpenedX Learning Management System (LMS), learners are able to browse course descriptions, enroll in specific courses, access content, and complete any course completely free of charge. All learners who complete online courses offered through the GOLI platform with a passing grade of 70% or higher are eligible to purchase Continuing Education Units (CEUs) for a nominal charge.

Sample courses:
  • An Introduction to Professional Writing for Geoscience Careers
  • Tracking Global Supply Critical Materials
  • Basics of Seismic Petroleum Exploration for New Hires
  • Best Practices in Mineral Resource Estimation & Reporting
  • Fundamentals of Professional Ethics: Elements and Examples
  • Professional Geologist Licensure Requirements and the ASBOG National Geology License Examinations

Seismological evidence for the earliest global subduction network at 2 Ga ago
Science Advances
The earliest evidence for subduction, which could have been localized, does not signify when plate tectonics became a global phenomenon. To test the antiquity of global subduction, we investigated Paleoproterozoic time, for which seismic evidence is available from multiple continents. We used a new high-density seismic array in North China to image the crustal structure that exhibits a dipping Moho bearing close resemblance to that of the modern Himalaya.

What's in oilfield wastewater matters for injection-induced earthquakes
Virginia Tech via Phys.org
A team of geoscience researchers in the Virginia Tech College of Science has developed a new theory to explain how and why injection-induced earthquakes continue to occur even when injection rates decline. Experts have known since the 1960s that when oilfield wastewater is pumped into the ground with deep injection wells, earthquakes can occur. Over the past decade, injection-induced earthquakes have become regular occurrences throughout oil and gas basins worldwide, particularly in the central United States, and potentially in China and Canada, as well.

Seismic reflection methods in offshore groundwater research
Geosciences
There is growing evidence that passive margin sediments in offshore settings host large volumes of fresh and brackish water of meteoric origin in submarine sub-surface reservoirs. Marine geophysical methods, in particular seismic reflection data, can help characterize offshore hydrogeological systems and yet the existing global database of industrial basin wide surveys remains untapped in this context. In this paper we highlight the importance of these data in groundwater exploration.

Lava tubes on Mars and the Moon are so wide they can host planetary bases
University of Bologna via ScienceDaily
Researchers at the Universities of Bologna and Padua studied the subsurface cavities that lava created underground on Mars and the Moon. These cavities can shield from cosmic radiation. The international journal Earth-Science Reviews published a paper offering an overview of the lava tubes (pyroducts) on Earth, eventually providing an estimate of the (greater) size of their lunar and Martian counterparts.

Fresh emplacement of hydrated sodium chloride on Ceres from ascending salty fluids
Nature Astronomy
The surface and internal structure of Ceres show evidence of a global process of aqueous alteration, indicating the existence of an ocean in the past. However, it is not clear whether part of this ocean is still present and whether residual fluids are still circulating in the dwarf planet.
