American Geosciences Institute
For scientists, geoscientists and paleontologists in particular, access to public lands is crucial. This table illustrates whois allowed to access federal public lands, the permits and expertise required to use them, and whether or not public lands are open to commercial development for any number of applications. The agencies represented here manage more than 97% of all federal land, with the remaining parcels managed by a plethora of other federal entities.

Researchers have produced a new estimate for the origin of Earth's plate tectonics. Although there is broad consensus that plate tectonics have played a significant role in our planet's geology during the last billion years or so, when exactly this process emerged and how it has evolved through time are two of the most significant and hotly debated questions in Earth sciences today, according to a study published in the journal Nature.

A growing interest appears among public authorities and society in accurate and nearly real time aftershock forecasting to manage and mitigate post-seismic risk. Existing methods for aftershock forecasting are strongly affected by the incompleteness of the instrumental datasets available soon after the main shock occurrence.

Reversal of Earth's magnetic field polarity every 105 to 106 years is among the most far-reaching, yet enigmatic, geophysical phenomena. The short duration of reversals make precise temporal records of past magnetic field behavior paramount to understanding the processes that produce them. We correlate new 40Ar/39Ar dates from transitionally magnetized lava flows to astronomically dated sediment and ice records to map the evolution of Earth’s last reversal.

Victor Camp has spent a lifetime studying volcanic eruptions all over the world, starting in Saudi Arabia, then Iran, and eventually the Pacific Northwest. The geology lecturer finds mantle plumes that feed the largest of these eruptions fascinating, because of their massive size and the impact they can have on our environment. Over the past two years, this abiding interest helped him connect the dots and discover that the mantle source rock that rises upward from beneath Yellowstone National Park to feed its periodic supereruptions also spreads out west all the way to Northern California and Oregon.

Change in glacier area in the Kuksu and Kunes river basins, which are tributaries to the internationally important Ile River, were assessed at two different time steps between 1962/63, 1990/93, and 2010/12. Overall, glaciers lost 191.3 ± 16.8 km2 or 36.9 ± 6.5% of the initial area. Glacier wastage intensified in the latter period.

Simultaneous leaching of seafloor massive sulfides (SMS) from Loki's Castle on the Arctic Mid-Ocean Ridge (AMOR) and polymetallic nodules (PN) from Clarion Clipperton Zone (CCZ) of the Central Pacific Ocean was studied. Leaching tests were conducted using sulfuric acid and sodium chloride, at a temperature of 80 degrees Celsius for 48 h under reflux. The effect of PN-to-SMS ratio was examined.

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) are a rapidly evolving tool in geosciences and are increasingly deployed for studying the dynamic processes of the Earth's surface. To assess the potential of autonomous low-cost UAVs for the mapping and monitoring of alpine glaciers, we conducted multiple aerial surveys on the Kanderfirn in the Swiss Alps in 2017 and 2018 using open hardware and software of the Paparazzi UAV project.

Among the various technologies tested for removing the anionic species resulting from arsenic contamination, sorption methods have received unflagging interest. Being potential sorbent materials, clay minerals modified by cationic surfactants are often examined for this purpose. Among the clay minerals tested, information regarding sorption properties of expanded vermiculite modified with surfactants is scarce. Therefore, the present study aims to prepare organo-vermiculites modified with hexadecyltrimethylammonium (HDTMA) and benzyldimethylhexadecylammonium (HDBA) at surfactant concentrations of 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 cation exchange capacity.
