Changes in perceived importance of select technical skills to the geoscience profession
AIPG
AGI Geoscience Currents - In 2021 and 2022, we surveyed participants in the Geoscience COVID-19 Survey about their views on the importance of select technical skills to working in the geoscience profession. Across participant cohorts, the skills rated most important to working in the geoscience profession were data visualization and mapping software skills, followed by database development and management and graphic design.
We will continue to provide current snapshots on the impacts of COVID-19 on the geoscience enterprise throughout the year. For more information about the study, please visit: www.americangeosciences.org/workforce/covid19
Funding for this project is provided by the National Science Foundation (Award #2029570). The results and interpretation of the survey are the views of the American Geosciences Institute and not those of the National Science Foundation.
Please visit the Geoscience Currents webpage (www.americangeosciences.org/geoscience-currents) for more information.
Geoscience Currents transmit snapshots of the many facets of the geoscience profession, in-depth case studies of how geoscience is applied, factsheets that provide rigorous introductions to a range of geoscience topics, workforce trends, and career paths. These short reports and data briefs represent collaborations with other societies, employers, and professionals. Topics for Geoscience Currents are often inspired by inquiries from the geoscience community.

Geoscience Event Calendar launched for geoscience community
AIPG
ALEXANDRIA, Va. — The American Geosciences Institute (AGI) is pleased to launch its new Geoscience Event Calendar, featuring events sponsored by AGI Federation organizations.
The calendar, available to view for free by anyone, features events posted by AGI Member Societies, International Associates, Regional Associates, Trade Associates, Academic Associates, and Liaison Organizations.
Now geoscience professionals can go to one place to see many major events taking place in the coming months and years, and society leaders can plan future events with the help of a resource that provides a clear view of the timing of upcoming events.
"AGI's new Geoscience Event Calendar is an online tool designed to showcase the many in-person, virtual, and hybrid events that help to make our network of geoscience societies such a vibrant, robust professional community," said AGI Executive Director Jonathan Arthur. "These conferences, meetings, webinars, and more are the events where geoscience community members share, learn, and make connections that matter."

AGI launches diversity, equity & inclusion online resource
AIPG
ALEXANDRIA, Va. — The American Geosciences Institute (AGI) is pleased to announce the launch of its new Diversity, Equity & Inclusion website, providing the geoscience community with a host of resources — some developed by AGI, and some by AGI Federation affiliates — addressing issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI).
Through this website, users are linked directly to information on and ways to engage with:
- DEI initiatives and statements of dozens of AGI Federation affiliates
- A framework that geoscience societies can use to cultivate inclusion, increase equity, and address intersectionality across race, class, disability status, and gender
- A scholarship supporting geoscience graduate studies for a U.S. minority student who self-identifies as being of a minority background underrepresented in the geosciences
- Two scholarships supporting female geoscience graduate students in the United States
- An ad-hoc committee helping to coordinate the geoscience community's DEI efforts
- AGI's internal DEI committee working to ensure that that the institute is a welcoming and inclusive organization effectively engaging with all populations
- Webinars hosted by AGI exploring issues of DEI in the geosciences, as well as recommendations for effectively addressing them
- A National Science Foundation-supported report and related resources on strengthening diversity in geoscience higher education
- A website promoting girls and women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, including related education resources
"Working in close collaboration with our member organizations, partners, and others, AGI supports a diverse and representative geoscience community," says AGI Executive Director Jonathan Arthur. "We can provide better geoscience solutions for society only when we provide opportunities for diverse experiences, perspectives, and participation within our community."

AIPG Mentoring Program
AIPG
AIPG believes mentoring is integral to encouraging geoscientists throughout their careers. This can include discussions on many different topics, including but not limited to:
- specific geoscience topics or questions
- education and experience required for specific career tracks
- any geoscience topic of interest
- geoscience employment search
- selecting the best-suited geoscience career track
- work abroad experiences in geosciences
AIPG is setting up this mentor site to encourage one-on-one AIPG-member discussions. We encourage the mentor and mentee to include others in their discussions and research as needed. A mentor may or may not have applicable experience or knowledge related to a mentee's area of interest, but the mentor will help find information and/or an alternate mentor.
AIPG Members interested in becoming a Mentor can submit the online Mentor form.

Antarctic glaciers are melting away at the fastest rate in 5,500 years
SciTechDaily
A study finds that two major glaciers in the West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS) are losing ice at the fastest rate for at least 5,500 years.
The huge glaciers that reach deep into the core of the ice sheet might contribute up to 3.4 meters to global sea level rise over the next few centuries if they continue to retreat at their current rate.

Using seismology for groundwater management
Phys.org
As climate change increases the number of extreme weather events, such as megadroughts, groundwater management is key for sustaining water supply. But current groundwater monitoring tools are either costly or insufficient for deeper aquifers, limiting our ability to monitor and practice sustainable management in populated areas.

A prehistoric climate feedback loop
ScienceDaily
Against the backdrop of a rapidly warming planet, the need to better understand the nature and long-term impact of positive climatic feedback loops — processes that accelerate the effects of warming — becomes critically important.
One way to assess the role and impact of climatic feedback processes is to use modeling studies to look into the likely future based on what we know now.
