Our field trips will explore central Colorado including the Cripple Creek and Victor gold mine, the upper Arkansas geothermal systems, the latest in SW South Park geology, and the Wall Mountain Tuff, among others. As well as guest tours to the Garden of the Gods and Florissant Fossil Beds National. The technical sessions will cover the full spectrum of geosciences. Go online for presentation schedules and abstracts. Short courses on being an expert witness, the use of Rockware's software, and preparing an AIPG/AGI GOLI course. We have an Association of Women Geoscientists (AWG) Workshop and Student Career Workshop on Saturday, Sept. 8. Earn CEUs for attending.

1 p.m. EDT, Aug. 30.
The glacial and bedrock geology of New England is varied and complex. We will take you on a journey through the formation of these geological features and then provide information on why a groundwater well in this geological terrain needs to be re-developed and how we know when a well needs to be re-developed. We will introduce and explain the term "specific capacity" and why it is so important to monitor during the life cycle of a well.

AGI is proud to announce a new film series, "Earth as Inspiration." Narrated by AGI Ambassador Sally Jewell, the series underscores the importance of Earth science learning and understanding for young and old audiences alike. Watch the first chapter of "Earth as Inspiration" here.
"It's all about unlocking the curiosity in the next generation, so they can be inspired to think about going into scientific disciplines and actually engage in the process of creating a future that is going to be exciting for them, but also sustainable for our planet," Jewell said in her first engagement in this role, attending the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF) recently.

AIPG and AGI partnered to build a platform called the Geoscience Online Learning Initiative that hosts online courses covering a variety of geoscience topics. Courses are developed as one of two formats: either live webinar events or on-demand courses. Many of our live webinar events get converted into on-demand courses. Heather Houlton, AGI's Workforce Development Specialist will demonstrate how to become involved with GOLI. She will provide guidance to our attendees about process and mechanics of presenting a live webinar and then converting it to an online program. She will also review the process by which AIPG members can contribute to GOLI without being a speaker on a live webinar event.

The STACK (Sooner Trend Anadarko Canadian Kingfisher) Play was discovered in 2011. The play has quickly become one of the hottest resource plays in North America. Despite extensive drilling activity in this play, our understanding of the petroleum geology of the play is limited. Therefore, the main objective of this workshop is to learn from researchers and operators in the STACK Play, with an emphasis on the Meramec Lime and Woodford Shale. Presentations will focus on the depositional system, stratigraphy (biostratigraphy and chemostratigraphy), geochemistry, petrophysics, facies analysis, and fracture characterization that are beneficial for a better understanding of the play and commercial production of hydrocarbons from these low porosity and low permeability reservoirs.

After rigorous research with dozens of operators across the Permian, Appalachian, Rockies, Mid-Continent and beyond, the highly-anticipated 5th AnnualCost-Effective Well Site Facilities Onshore conference returns to Houston in September.
With brand new event features and improvements built in over three full days, this year's agenda focuses on the ultimate goal of growing without increasing cost, while achieving a smaller footprint — meaning increased capital benefit, reduced processing footprint, reduction in labor time, improvement in safety — and covers the full breath of best practices to take a project from strategy to full development mode.

The ways how water from rain or melting snow flows over and beneath the Earth's surface affects the timing and intensity at which the same water leaves catchment. Several mathematical techniques have been proposed to quantify the transit time of water by e.g. convolving the input-output tracer signals or constructing frequency response functions. The primary assumption of these techniques is that the transit time is regarded time-invariant.

A powerful earthquake shook Venezuela's northeastern coast on Aug. 21, forcing residents in the capital to evacuate buildings and interrupting a pro-government rally in support of controversial economic reforms.
The 7.3 quake was the largest to strike Venezuela since 1900, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. But at a depth of some 76 miles it appeared to have caused only limited damage even near its epicenter a few miles off the sparsely populated Cariaco peninsula stretching into the eastern Caribbean.

Precursory seismicity is often observed before a large earthquake. Small foreshocks occur within the mainshock rupture area, which cannot be explained by simple models that assume homogeneous friction on the entire fault. In this study, we consider a frictionally heterogeneous fault model, motivated by recent observations of geologic faults and slow earthquakes. This study investigates slip behavior on faults governed by a rate- and state-dependent friction law.

Determining the volume of the various types of products of a highly frequent active volcano can be very difficult, especially if most of them are deposited on a growing volcanic cone. The New South-East Crater (NSEC) of Mt Etna, Italy, may be considered one of the best case studies because of tens of paroxysmal episodes, which it produced in the last few years.

An objective method for generating statistically sound objective regolith-landform maps using widely accessible digital topographic and geophysical data without requiring specific regional knowledge is demonstrated and has application as a first pass tool for mineral exploration in regolith dominated terrains. This method differs from traditional regolith-landform mapping methods in that it is not subject to interpretation and bias of the mapper. This study was undertaken in a location where mineral exploration has occurred for more than 20 years and traditional regolith mapping had recently been completed using a standardized subjective methodology.
