AIPG
AIPG and AGI partnered to build a platform called the Geoscience Online Learning Initiative that hosts online courses covering a variety of geoscience topics. Courses are developed as one of two formats: either live webinar events or on-demand courses. Many of our live webinar events get converted into on-demand courses. Heather Houlton, AGI's Workforce Development Specialist will demonstrate how to become involved with GOLI. She will provide guidance to our attendees about process and mechanics of presenting a live webinar and then converting it to an online program. She will also review the process by which AIPG members can contribute to GOLI without being a speaker on a live webinar event.

The STACK (Sooner Trend Anadarko Canadian Kingfisher) Play was discovered in 2011. The play has quickly become one of the hottest resource plays in North America. Despite extensive drilling activity in this play, our understanding of the petroleum geology of the play is limited. Therefore, the main objective of this workshop is to learn from researchers and operators in the STACK Play, with an emphasis on the Meramec Lime and Woodford Shale. Presentations will focus on the depositional system, stratigraphy (biostratigraphy and chemostratigraphy), geochemistry, petrophysics, facies analysis, and fracture characterization that are beneficial for a better understanding of the play and commercial production of hydrocarbons from these low porosity and low permeability reservoirs.

The behavior of COH fluids, their isotopes (hydrogen and carbon), and their interaction with magmatic liquids are at the core of understanding formation and evolution of the Earth. Experimental data are needed to aid our understanding of how COH volatiles affect rock-forming processes in the Earth's interior. Here, I present a review of experimental data on structure of fluids and melts and an assessment of how structural factors govern hydrogen and carbon isotope partitioning within and between melts and fluids as a function of redox conditions, temperature and pressure.

Frontiers in Earth Science
Volcanic eruptions occur when a conduit forms to connect a crustal magma reservoir to Earth's surface. Conduit formation is generally assumed to be a "bottom-up" process and a major driver of precursory volcanic seismicity, which is the most commonly monitored parameter at volcanoes worldwide. If both assumptions are true, initial precursory seismicity should coincide spatially with petrologically-estimated magma reservoir depths. A review of six well-constrained case studies of arc volcanoes that erupt after repose intervals of decades indicates that, to the contrary, initial precursory seismicity is consistently several kilometers shallower than the magma reservoir.

Extracting reaction-kinetic distributions, in terms of activation energies (E) and pre-exponential factors (A), from the S2 peak data generated by pyrolysis tests conducted at three or more distinct heating ramps, is a well-established technique. These reaction-kinetics distributions are of paramount importance in establishing the timing and degree of petroleum generation from shales undergoing a range of burial and thermal histories.

Wildfires naturally occur worldwide, however the potential disruption to ecosystem services from subsequent post-fire flooding and erosion often necessitates a response from land managers. The impact of high severity wildfire on infiltration and interrill erosion responses was evaluated for five years after the 2003 Hot Creek Fire in Idaho. Relative infiltration from mini-disk tension infiltrometers (MDI) was compared to rainfall simulation measurements on small burned and control plots.

Graphitization of carbonaceous materials (CM) has been experimentally demonstrated as potential evidence of seismic slip within a fault gouge. The southern segment of the Longmenshan fault, a CM-rich-gouge fault, accommodated coseismic slip during the 2008 Mw 7.9 Wenchuan earthquake and potentially preserves a record of processes that occurred on the fault during the slip event. Here, we present a multi-technique characterization of CM within the active fault zone of the Longmenshan fault from the Wenchuan earthquake Fault Scientific Drilling-1.
