AGI Geoscience Currents: Geoscience Employment Begins to Rebound in 2021
AIPG
as well as industry-level employment trends for the sectors in which geoscientists work. Data from the U.S. Census Bureau's Current Population Survey provides monthly occupational employment data, while data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Current Employment Statistics dataset enables the examination of changes in monthly employment across industry sectors (but does not provide industry-occupational specificity).
Between March and June 2021, geoscience employment began to rebound, with strong growth in geoscientist and environmental scientist occupations, petroleum, mining, and geological engineering, atmospheric and space science, environmental science and geoscience technician occupations, and environmental engineering. A few occupational categories contracted during this time period, including conservation scientists, geoscience civil engineering, geoscience post-secondary teaching, and geoscience-related management occupations.
Employment increased across most sectors during the first half of 2021, with the exceptions being local government and state government, where employment contracted by 33,200 jobs and 18,200 jobs respectively. While the support activities for mining sector had the largest percentage change in employment in 2021, the largest absolute employment increases in 2021 were in the colleges and universities sector and in the management and technical consulting services sector.

Researchers identify new source for earthquakes and tsunamis in the Greater Tokyo Region
ScienceDaily
Researchers have discovered geologic evidence that unusually large earthquakes and tsunamis from the Tokyo region — located near tectonic plate boundaries that are recognized as a seismic hazard source — may be traceable to a previously unconsidered plate boundary. The team, headed by Simon Fraser University Earth scientist Jessica Pilarczyk, has published its research today in Nature Geoscience.

Geologists propose theory about a famous asteroid
Phys.org
The asteroid Vesta is the second largest asteroid in our Solar System. With a diameter of about 330 miles, it orbits the sun between the planets Mars and Jupiter.
Asteroids have long played a part in building popular fascination with space. "Marooned off Vesta" was the first story published by American writer Isaac Asimov, the third story he wrote, appearing in the March 1939 issue of the science fiction magazine Amazing Stories.

The right mixture of salts to get life started
ScienceDaily
In modern organisms, the hereditary material DNA encodes the instructions for the synthesis of proteins — the versatile nanomachines that enable modern cells to function and replicate. But how was this functional linkage between DNA and proteins established? According to the "RNA world" hypothesis, primordial living systems were based on self-replicating RNA molecules.

Astronaut geology bound for the moon
Phys.org
Finding and collecting the best lunar samples will be a major task for the next astronauts on the moon. ESA's Pangaea training campaign launches today to equip astronauts with a geologist's eye on the moon — humanity's next space destination to help us understand more about our solar system.
The course has come of age in its fourth edition with a greater focus on Earth's only natural satellite.

The strange race to track down a missing billion years
BBC
"FEARFUL DISASTER," read the headline on the front page of the Chicago Tribune on 3 July 1869.
The paper was referring to an incident involving a motley team of explorers led by the one-armed, self-taught geologist John Wesley Powell. Their mission was simple, though not easy — to travel 1,000 miles (1,609km) downstream from the banks of the Green River in Wyoming, cataloguing their finds as they went.
It had been some weeks since anyone had heard from the party, and public anxiety was mounting.
